With weeks away from a brand new year, Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet is the chosen hue of 2018. Not to worry, this is not going to leave you with nasty UV spots. Rather this shade is described as “dramatically provocative and thoughtful” and it helps with “originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us towards the future”.
Purple had been making a steady appearance in pop culture and fashion for the past decades. Think David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix or Balenciaga Men’s Spring 2018 and Gucci 2018. Perhaps, most synonymous of all is the late Prince, who was even honoured with his own Pantone purple called Love Symbol #2 this year.
Purple symbolises experimentation and non-conformity; it inspires individuals to make their own mark in the world and push the boundaries through creative means. Historically, the regal tone is a colour that’s associated to royalty as well as spirituality. It is reported that purple energises people that gather in meditation spaces and inspire connection.
“The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today,” said Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.
