Mattel unveils its new 3D printer for toys

Man, 21st century kids have got things going so good. Oh, how we’re mulling enviously over Mattel’s latest announcement: the new ThingMaker, a 3D printer from which kids and their parents can print action figures, jewellery, dolls and pretty much anything they want, right in their homes.

While 3D printing technology isn’t a new revelation, Mattel has come up with one that you can not only take home and easily create toys via an accompanying mobile application, but it prints things in an array of fun colours too. That said, we foresee many a kid and parent going crazy with creativity.

Set to retail at about $299 in the fall, the ThingMaker comes with a mobile application that allows you to browse through templates and build your own creations, made up of numerous parts. The ThingMaker will then print the parts in batches that you can assemble. The app will also be able to be used with other printers.

This latest announcement is a massive upgrade on the ThingMaker, which actually made its debut back in the 1960s. Except then, it had been a sort-of mould thing that allowed kids to create their own bug collections.
