After nearly two weeks of glamorous red carpet moments and notable film screenings, The 69th Annual Cannes Film Festival has drawn to a close. The festivities rounded up with the awards night, as this year’s jury—led by Australian director George Miller—made the tough decision of choosing the winners from the 21 competition entries. Here is the list of the victorious:
Palme d’Or: I, Daniel Blake – Ken Loach
Grand Prix: It’s Only the End of the World – Xavier Dolan
Best Director(s): Olivier Assayas – Personal Shopper and Christian Mungui – Graduation
Best Screenplay: The Salesman – Asghar Farhadi
Best Actress: Jaclyn Jose – Ma’ Rosa
Best Actor: Shahab Hosseini – The Salesman
Jury Prize: American Honey – Andrea Arnold
Director Ken Loach’s film, I, Daniel Blake, that highlights the plight of people in poverty and unemployment in the U.K. landed him the Palme d’Or, the most coveted award of the night. Meanwhile, Xavier Dolan picked up the Grand Prix with his family drama It’s Only the End of the World—a decision that has been met with not-so-favourable responses. But alas, the jury has spoken, and critics will just have to accept it as it is. Some of the favourites did make it after all, like I, Daniel Blake, Graduation and Personal Shopper, which reportedly sees Kristen Stewart giving one of her best performances yet. Other honourable mentions that were tipped to bag an award were Paul Verhoeven’s psychological thriller Elle and Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson, a wonderful drama which stars Adam Driver as a poetic bus driver. Well, we can’t be the judge of them ourselves now, in the meantime we’ll just watch the trailers and hope the films will make their way to our shores soon.
