The Balvenie remains one of the few distilleries in the world to preserve its five rare crafts, from growing and malting barley to cask-making and maturation, each step requiring skill honed over decades. In 1973, a select group of distillery artisans filled two casks—a European oak butt and an American oak hogshead—laying the groundwork for what would become the Fifty Collection. These casks, tended with care and reverence, were watched over by hands both steady and expert, ensuring the spirit within would evolve with elegance over the decades.

Today, Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie continues this lineage, carrying forward the legacy of those early makers while blending her own vision and expertise. She carefully selects, marries, and monitors casks to create a character unique to each edition, honouring tradition while pushing the boundaries of flavour complexity. THE SECOND EDITION: A RARE CONVERGENCE OF TIME AND TALENT

The Second Edition is a true collector’s gem, with only 97 bottles worldwide and a single bottle arriving in Malaysia. For whisky connoisseurs, it presents a singular experience to engage with decades of heritage and craftsmanship. This edition blends the 1973 European oak butt from the inaugural release with a 1973 American oak hogshead, achieving a balance that is both harmonious and extraordinarily rare.

“This profile was chosen to complement the European oak influence of The First Edition, creating a marriage of casks that brings both contrast and continuity to the flavour thread running through the trilogy,” McKechnie explains. “The collection reflects our respect for tradition and our commitment to looking to the future by preserving the rare crafts of whisky making from barley to bottle.”

Bottled at 49.8% ABV, the Second Edition is a sensory journey in both aroma and taste. On the nose, floral hints of violet and rose mingle with sticky toffee and subtle spice, resting on a foundation of warming oak. On the palate, molten dates, soft currants, and a gentle citrus lift intertwine with creamy honey and a buttery finish. A lingering warmth unfolds with every sip, giving way to the impeccable taste and intricate journey within each cask.

Meanwhile, its presentation mirrors the sophistication of its contents. Each hand-blown bottle is encased in a bespoke Croglin-crafted display, featuring over 100 individual elements, seven ultra-thin layers of wood in a delicate helix, and 14-carat gold-plated detailing.
