1. GAMTAN

Coming in from our neighbours across the causeway, Gamtan is ready to bring you all sorts of fiery Korean grilled meats. While you can expect the standard issue cuts like belly and jowl on the menu, the lesser-known, butcher-approved rare cuts from the Butcher’s Cut set will steal the show. Add its signature daepa makchang (green onion pork intestines) and sotbap to your order and you’ve got yourself a complete Gamtan meal.

Here, the menu puts its best plant-based foot forward, serving diners vibrant and fresh bowls that don’t skimp on taste. Try its bukkake udon for a vegetable-heavy plate that will take care of your daily greens intake, go for a warm, classic curry udon, or entice your spice tolerance with a special tom yam soup udon. Speaking of noodles, a new ramen specialist has entered the chat at The Pocket. Ramen Monster, which has already been serving bowls at Absorb Sunlight, joins the hoard of cafés and hangouts at Sungai Besi’s latest lifestyle hub. Known for its soulful and deep broths, it definitely knows how to deliver a satisfying bowl of ramen. The most popular pick has been its tonkotsu shoyu ramen but give its truffle shoyu ramen a shot if you’re feeling indulgent.

4. LOOOZER

Matcha specialist Looozer has finally found a brick-and-mortar home. Previously operating on a pop-up basis with a collaborative special sprinkled here and there, it has joined The Pocket’s directory with its chic, industrial space. The menu is packed with specialty matcha drinks, all infused with ingredients that go well with the staple Japanese green tea. Those who prefer non-matcha sips can instead go for one of its “fizzers” or coconut cloud drinks.

5. A LONG TABLE

Located within The Objects Store at REXKL UP, A Long Table combines quiet teahouse sensibilities with a community-centric concept. A large communal table serves as the centrepiece of the space, where visitors can sip on their orders slowly while taking in the calm. On the daily, the menu will offer seasonal selections of tea, but expect pop-ups and collaborations to blossom on its calendars every now and then.

For the ones who can’t seem to halt their hunt for good slices, Omna is your muse of the month. Its menu spans pizzas, pastas, and all the other feel-good Italian flavours that are sure to make your heart and palate happy. 9. DEAR HEARTS AND CHILLED SPIRITS

Dear Hearts and Chilled Spirits is for the cocktail enthusiasts that love their drinks balanced and humour dry (in a good way, we must add). This new pet-friendly, 1950s-inspired haunt in Petaling Jaya has made a name for itself with its chicken rice cocktail that truly does the iconic dish justice. However, the rest of its menu, curated by head bartender-owner Jason Yee, also deserves a round of applause. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot its mascot, Sharpay the pug!

If you’re all about smoked meats and pizza, then New Elvy’s is set to be your next go-to eatery. Made for the carnivores that love their slices too, the menu is packed with meat-forward pies that each star a different protein courtesy of Project Smoked. Plus, its entire menu pairs exceptionally well with craft beer, which means it’s a good thing New Elvy’s has partnered with Monster and Beer to provide the libations here.
