1. Fat Cat
From the creators of The Good Batch Cafe and Nara Kitchen & Co comes a slight fusion of the two: Comfort food meets contemporary aesthetics. Expect wholesome Japanese rice bowls, fusion stir-fried ramen and a variety of all-day breakfast platters. To complement: A sophisticated beverage menu featuring the brands Takeover Coffee, Niko Neko and Gryphon Organic Teas.

2. Anneh
KL has a wide variety of eateries offering solid Indian cuisine, especially banana leaf rice—or as we like to call it, BLR. Anneh’s version features the usual favourites except it includes pork such as pork varuval, pork vindaloo and, our personal favourite, their signature Devil Rib Curry.
Rather than your typical BLR spot or an Indian restaurant, consider Anneh more of a BLR cafe with a lard of hipster vibes (the logo features a ‘stache and their tagline is ‘Banana leaf made sexy)!) and a pun-derful menu (with section names like ‘Chick This Out’ and ‘Emergen-Sea’).
We would have liked the fried squid to be a bit more crispy and less chewy but otherwise, it’s truly the pork dishes here that shine. Have we mentioned that the Devil Rib Curry is our favourite?

3. Geographer Cafe
Adding to the list of quaint cafes popping up in old-school places is Geographer Cafe taking up residence in a pre-war shophouse in the Historic Triangle of Chinatown. Yes, it’s the same one from Malacca. Great use of adapting the interiors to match its old heritage charm. Great menu of classic favourites made anew (they have a vegan version of Curry Laksa). And sometimes there’s live music to liven up the atmosphere.

4. Bocosan Izakaya
Botanica & Co. has a new neighbour and it’s their sister restaurant, Bocosan Izakaya. A Japanese restaurant that borders on the izakaya concept with much care and detail in the aesthetics, this could well be the next It place. The interior is spacious, warmly lit by natural lighting and a style that encompasses Scandinavian’s favourite use of neutral tones with a pop of pink and blue. The same eye for design carries on to the dishes, evident in the first item that was served to our table—the Bonsai Salad, a colourful arrangement of fresh salad greens, carrots and mushrooms with potato salad served in a pastel pink bowl. Stay tuned for our full review. (Tip: Do order the Truffle Chawanmushi.)
Address: Bangsar South (next to Botanica & Co.)
Opening hours: 11.30am-3pm & 5.30pm-10pm (closed on Sundays)

5. Isabel
Yet another all-too-familiar F&B group has produced another sibling restaurant. Alexis’ little sister is named Isabel and she takes over the space that was once Palate Palette on Jalan Mesui. Within its doors (and outside its shopfront) is a party of Instagram-worthy corners complete with the foolproof combination of marble counters, a strong white colour palette, furniture with wooden accents and basket-like weaves, and tropical vibes galore. Isabel’s menu favours Southeast Asian flavours with most managing to evoke a sense of nostalgia. With an impressive bar corner, it wouldn’t do to leave without trying a cocktail or two. We know where’ll going to be next Friday night.
Address: 21, Jalan Mesui, 50200 Kuala Lumpur
Opening hours: 12pm-12am (Tuesdays-Saturdays); 12pm-7pm (Sundays)
