11 Cafes and restaurants at APW Bangsar you shouldn’t miss

Short for A Place Where, APW is a commercial printing factory turned creative multifunctional space situated in Bangsar with a great history behind it. The space, formerly known as Art Printing Works before it was retitled to A Place Where, was first established in 1952. When the inevitable demise of print took place, APW was given new life through an eclectic mix of restaurants, cafes and watering holes over the past few years.

Not only that, the space is now most commonly used for creative events, weekend bazaars, and more. Today, APW is known as a creative campus where arts, culture, business, and tech converge. More importantly, it has become a staple meeting place for urbanites in KL looking to dine, hang out, or who are in search of a nightcap.

Here are 11 cafes and restaurants at APW Bangsar that you may want to add to your list of F&B spots to tick off.

Brought to you by The Tokyo Restaurant, Bask is a little cafe offering smooth, rich and creamy basque burnt cheesecake and coffee in a chic setting with dark wood tones contrasted by jungle green walls and cool-toned tiles. Now, there is no need to go all the way to Lot 10 for a slice of this melt-in-your-mouth treat that was once selling like hotcakes with queues on end!

Breakfast Thieves

One of the very first F&B joints that popularised APW as a cool hangout spot is Breakfast Thieves. The cafe originally made a name for itself when it was opened in Melbourne, Australia in 2012 by three Malaysians, and now those in Kuala Lumpur are able to enjoy many Australian brunch favourites peppered with Asian influence within its brightly lit glasshouse space.

Essentially a two-in-one, Chef T. Jay’s Flat Earth Tacos and Soul Byrd occupies a bright orange tiled nook at APW offering Latin American favourites such as tacos, tostadas, burritos, quesadillas and taquitos as well as crispy southern fried chicken in a variety of spice levels. Kaiju Company

At Kaiju Company, the elephant in the room is its 100-foot paper origami dragon that sits above its dining space indoors. While the restaurant, which melds together Thai and Japanese flavours into one wholesome menu, is not new, it underwent a transformation to double its dining space mid-last year. You’ll find some yummy mains, rice bowls, noodle dishes, and sides on its menu, and we adore the casual and laid-back vibes that its new space extends.

Pulp

Pulp is considered an OG amongst the legions of coffeehouses in Kuala Lumpur, and is managed by the people behind Papa Palheta in Singapore. Located in what used to be the cutting room of APW, PULP’s industrial space has ample sunlight shining in and makes for the ideal spot for a freshly brewed cuppa. Pulp also supplies coffee beans to other cafes around the city and is highly recommended for its coffees so you know you’re getting the good stuff.

Olivia Deli

Featuring Southern European fare from the likes of Spain and Portugal, Olivia Deli is both a deli shop and restaurant with a casual outdoor dining area that emanates a homey and unpretentious energy. Some of its highlights include its paellas, cold cuts and cheese boards, variety of tapas, and daily specials that are contingent on the availability of ingredients. Evidently, ordering a jug of sangria while dining there is non-negotiable.

Pronounced Wa-ik, this tapas-style sushiya sees Sabahan flavours intermingling with classic Japanese cuisine and was brought to life by husband-and-wife duo Jack Weldie and Diane Ong, the maestros behind Chipta11A and Awesome Canteen. While you still get the archetypal Japanese fare like sushi and donburis, quintessential Sabahan ingredients are creatively weaved into its menu for a unique twist on the palate.
