BURO Spotlights: The launch of Telmont Champagne in Malaysia

Champagne is often synonymous with two things: celebrations and luxury. But the House of Telmont adds another qualifier to its brand of champagnes—sustainability. Officially launched in Malaysia on 15 June 2023, the eco-conscious champagne label made its sparkling debut at Bar Trigona, Four Seasons Kuala Lumpur with a bold statement, “The wine is only good if the Earth is good.”

Founded in 1912 by Henri Lhôpital, Telmont Champagne is now in its fourth generation of winegrowers—each passing on a strong commitment to their terroir and grapes, as well as ancestral know-how and mastery in winemaking, to their successor. The resulting house-style wines are characterised by tension and freshness, with a balanced acidity and long-lasting finish.

In 2017, the House received its first organic certification for a portion of the vineyards on its estate—an acknowledgement of its transition towards organic conversion. This attracted the attention of the Rémy Cointreau Group which identified with the values of the House, thus forming a unique partnership whereby the former purchased a majority share in Telmont Champagne in October 2020.

Today, Bertrand Lhôpital, the fourth and current generation of the founding family, continues to lead the House towards its aim to become 100 per cent certified in organic agriculture by 2025 as the Head of Viticulture and Cellar Master of Telmont. Meanwhile, President of Telmont Ludovic Du Plessis—who graced us at the launch event in KL—spearheads its environmental ambitions “in the name of Mother Nature.”

“My first tasting experience of Telmont Champagne was a beautiful discovery. The wines had a unique personality, presence, complexity, and maturity, all the while preserving a remarkable ethereality. Backed by the Rémy Cointreau Group and alongside Bertrand Lhôpital, I feel very lucky to be leading this incredible adventure,” Ludovic said at the launch.

He added: “Telmont is a house with character, boasting a legacy of craftsmanship and strong ambition, poised to become the standard bearer of a new relationship with nature. We have one foot rooted in tradition and one in modernity, and both feet on (and in) the earth.”

During the launch, guests were treated to a menu pairing session featuring four of Telmont’s most sought-after champagnes that are now available in Malaysia—Réserve Brut, Réserve Rosé, Blanc de Blancs 2013, and Vinothèque 2013. True to the House’s eco-conscious legacy, the champagne bottles are 100 per cent recyclable and excludes the use of gift boxes or packaging, arriving with production details printed on the labels instead.

Among the notable personalities in attendance include Bay Doucet, Lynn Lim, Natalie Prabha, Roen Cian, Carey Ng, Jack Goh, Zhen Ning, Josh Kua, and many more. Take a closer look at the sparkling soiree in the gallery below.
