1. Shin Haru Tei, Petaling Jaya

Serving street-inspired Japanese cuisine, the menu in Shin Haru Tei consists of hearty dishes such as Ooki Chashu Ramen, Tonkotsu, and Oyako Don. The Japanese joint offers a wide variety of broths, including Pesto and Hiyashi (with wasabi).

While you’re here, make sure to try the restaurant’s very own hanbagu (hamburger)—part of Shin Haru Tei’s repertoire of yoshoku options.

2. Element Fresh, Bukit Bintang

Since its launch in 2002 in Shanghai, Element Fresh now has more than 40 restaurants—with the opening in Malaysia being its first in the country. The menu here consists of a plethora of international cuisines. Begin with Tuna Fillet and Avocado Salsa; Black Mussels in Fruity Fish Stock; as well as Moroccan Spiced Chicken with Bulgar Wheat Salad.

As for mains, try the Oven Roasted Codfish; Seafood Laksa; Kanto Grilled Eel; as well as King Prawn Pasta. There are also a myriad of vegan options here.

3. Fifty Tales, Bandar Sri Damansara

Accompanied by a minimal yet visually appealing space, Fifty Tales serves indulgent delicacies that are truly Malaysian yet contemporary. For example, Rice Please comes with protein in the form of eggs and pork. As a Malaysian Chinese Noodle Bar, Fifty Tales concocts egg noodles in-house and serves them in two different ways—dry or with the six-hour Chinese style pork bone broth.

4. M’Laboori Cafe, Petaling Jaya

The new cafe in SS2 offers coffee as well as goodies such as roti bakar and vegetarian pizza. You can also get a selection of traditional kuih-muih here—from Talam Keladi to Bingka Ubi to Ang Ku. Oh, the cafe doubles as a cute library space!

5. C’est La Vie Cafe Bar, Puchong

This pet friendly cafe is a speakeasy coffee house—serving cakes and pasta along with its signature selection of caffeinated options. Try the Dutch Baby, an all-day puffy baked treat, and the Porky Porky Burger. Scones here are served with homemade spread such as earl grey, cinnamon, espresso, and cream cheese flavours. If you’re longing for a caffeine-free drink, go for the Butterfly-Pea Flower tea.

6. A.Zeta Kitchen, Bangsar

Managed by Chef Andrea Zanella, A.Zeta is a restaurant that’s inspired by modern trattorias in Italy. Tradition really meets innovation here—and that’s apparent with its menu. In addition to products imported from Italy, A.Zeta also utilises local produce such as vegetables from farms in Cameron Highlands as well as fresh fish and seafood from Pulau Ketam.

The menu consists of dishes such as Prime Beef Brisket “Spezzatino” with glazed root vegetables; Tarragon Risotto with Bacon Ragout; and Venetian Cuttlefish Ink Sauce with Polenta. As for pasta, choose from tortelloni, taglierini, tagliatelle, and maccheroni lunghi.

7. Jibby By The Park, Desa ParkCity

There’s a new insta-worthy cafe in town and it’s operated by the team behind Serai and Blonde. The greenhouse setting of the new venue is filled with natural light and bountiful botanics as well as vintage glass panes.

Food options include the Fluffy Bobsy Pancake; Jibby Big Breakfast (with chicken sausage, beef bacon, sautéed kale, and falafel hash brown); Fun Boy Kentucky Fried Oysters; Crispy Shredded Duck and Watermelon Salad; as well as Ayam Bakar Madu. Check out the full menu here.
