#BUROSupportsLocal: 10 Local online stores for the "coolest" drinks in the Klang Valley
Take a sip (or ten)
It's no hidden fact that Malaysians love a good drink. Now more than ever, as Malaysians are working from home, we (sometimes) indulge in a cheeky soda or sugary drink. Whether it helps us focus (hello, caffeine) or complements our meals, the problem is that it may not be as innocent as it seems. According to one statistic, carbonated drinks make up 21 percent of the total non-alcoholic beverage sales in Malaysia. This is said to be the cause of Malaysia's high obesity rates and hence, the introduction of a sugar tax back in 2019.
In this edition of #BUROSupportsLocal, we aim to highlight 10 Malaysian online businesses and home-based enterprises that offer a healthy range of drinks, providing an excellent alternative to our regular go-to options. From vegan-friendly selections to kombucha brands you should definitely check out, we've got the solutions to quench your thirst (while keeping it gut-friendly).
1. Slō Kombucha
Slō Kombucha takes a different approach with their kombucha drinks by lowering the sugar levels, fermenting them for longer, as well as giving them a milder acidity level. Their N°1 is a combination of floral and fruity with a list of ingredients that include soothing black tea, apple, calming notes of lavender, thyme and rosemary. Next is the N°2, which features the sweet taste of green tea, exotic passionfruit and citrusy lemongrass. We recommend the N°2 if you're in the mood for something with a bit of a zesty kick. The third is the N°3, which is perfect for fans of all things sweet and floral. Its dark red hue is a clear giveaway for the drink's inclusion of roselle and rose petals in the ingredients. Top it off with some blueberries and lavender, and you've got a deliciously vibrant floral concoction. Besides their range of kombucha, they also have two green tea-infused flavours: Fukamushi-cha, a Japanese deep-steamed green tea and the Houjicha, a roasted green tea.
Prices for individual bottles of 240ml are RM12. Slō Kombucha's bundle of six (flavour of any choice) is RM65.

2. Matcha Addict
Matcha Addict takes pride in their delicious drinks that are both dairy- and guilt-free. One of their customer favourites is the Premium Grade Matcha Powder (RM99.90, per 100gm serving). It's 100 per cent authentic matcha, grounded from tea leaves hand-picked in Japan's Kyoto Prefecture—evident from the balanced umami flavour with a hint of natural sweetness. For a delicious treat, try their gluten-free Almond Tango Cookie (RM 24.90, per 250gm serving). In addition, the vegan Matcha Pistachio Spread (RM18.90 per 250gm serving) is a delicious accompaniment for breakfast that's packed with antioxidants. It's also free of sugar and preservatives. Last but not least, the delicious drinks trio set (RM35), which includes a calcium-fuelled soy milk-based Matcha Latte, a Matcha Refreshing Lemonade (its high lemon content is said to protect the liver while preventing anaemia) and the Matcha Cold Brew—all to keep you both energized and hydrated.
Matcha Addict's central kitchen is located in Cyberjaya. Orders are made online with next-day delivery for Klang Valley while postage is available throughout Malaysia (including Sabah and Sarawak).

3. Root (brew by root)
Kombucha is known to be a potential source of probiotics that is also rich in antioxidants. This popular drink is said to help with various health aspects including digestion, inflammation and even weight loss. If you're looking to give your tummy a break while boosting your immune system, they've got you covered. Root's sparkling kombucha provides the perfect alternative to a sugary soda or beer. It's refreshing with low sugar and no added preservatives, artificial colouring and flavouring. There are three different flavours: Black Tea, Ginger, Dragon Fruit (Root's current best seller) and Earl Grey Cinnamon. If you can't decide, try the Earl Grey Cinnamon. This flavour combines the classic black tea with earl grey and cinnamon for a vibrant floral and fruity aftertaste. The Dragon Fruit, on the other hand, pairs the authentic taste of the real fruit with the perfect balance of sweet, sour and fizzy notes.
Orders will be received within three to five days after it is placed.

4. Como Kombucha
Como Kombucha aims to create a memorable experience while engaging each of the five senses when customers drink their creations. Como Kombucha’s home-brewed drinks are made with fresh whole fruits, berries, roots and spices. The online business does a weekly rotation of different flavours incorporating local and seasonal fruits, including rambutan, mangosteen and even mata kucing. The drinks are fermented for a minimum of 10 days to produce a booch that is, to quote the Como Kombucha team, “strong in flavour and fizzes with life”. A quick peek into the bottle reveals its raw and unfiltered contents of healthy probiotics and sprightly pulp. There's a wide range of combinations, from a light and refreshing lemon and ginger to a sweet and floral mix of bunga kantan and pomegranate kombucha. If you’re a daily booch drinker, you’ll enjoy the fact that Como Kombucha sells both in small batches and by the litre. For a more sustainable consumer cycle with less waste, you can return your used bottles for a rebate on your next order.
Batches are available weekly for both self pick-up and delivery. Drop them a message via Instagram or their contact number.

5. Sheabrew Kombucha
How does one describe Sheabrew? Aside from their delicious home-brewed kombucha—made with a range of unique flavours that differ from what is already on the market—the store has also successfully marketed itself to a young Malaysian clientele. Flavours include the Apple and Elderflower, Pineapple and Asam Boi (for something more local), as well as their range of seasonal brews such as their Triple Berry Mint. The Triple Berry Mint stands out because it combines a refreshing blend of mint with strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, leaving you feeling fresh and energised to take on the day's challenges. Also, they know we Malaysians love a good tote bag, so they have designed their own custom totes (check out their IG). Another smart move: choosing to stock their drinks at two popular cafes in Klang Valley (both of them were featured on our recent #BUROEats).

6. Alocha Kombucha
While fermented foods like kimchi and sauerkraut are popular dishes around the globe, fermented drinks can often be a hit or a miss. Enter Alocha Kombucha, a local enterprise that delivers home-brewed fermented tea with a mission to help Malaysians lead a healthier lifestyle, one drink at a time. Their bestsellers include the Peach Kombucha, Blackcurrant Kombucha, Tropical Fruits Kombucha and the Passion Fruit Kombucha.
We recommend the Peach Kombucha because it combines the fruity flavour of sweet peach with just the right amount of fizzy-ness. Alocha also promotes the inclusion of healthy probiotics in each bottled serving, which helps against bloating, gassiness, constipation, and stress. Plus, their flavours also make a fantastic kombucha cocktail that's undoubtedly a healthier alternative to your regular sugar syrup or carbonated soda water.
Alocha Kombucha is a homebrew kombucha store based in Subang and Shah Alam. They are available on AirAsia Food. DM their Instagram to order.

7. Transparent Bangsar
Transparent Bangsar is aptly named because every brew's flavours are "transparent" as the team is dedicated to showcasing the true characteristics of coffee from different origins and regions. Their single-origin cold brew is made with coffee beans roasted by Artisan Roast. One of their top recommendations is the Cold Brew Black. This drink is brewed with coffee directly sourced from Volcan Azul, Costa Rica, with bright juicy prune and jujube profiles. Next, take a trip to Brazil with the Cold Brew White. Brewed with coffee directly sourced from Fazenda Passeio, Brazil, this caffeinated drink has long-lasting subtle notes of hazelnut with a choc-like aftertaste. The Cold Brew Oat Milk matches Minor Figures oat milk perfectly, resulting in a chocolatey and nutty flavour with the pleasantly mild oat-y aftertaste. A customer favourite is the Oatmilk White. Transparent Bangsar serves Minor Figures oat milk as a dairy-free alternative.
All cold brews are available in 420ml, which is enough for three to four servings per bottle.

8. Shake Smoothie Bar
If kombucha isn't your thing—and neither are caffeinated drinks—Shake Smoothie Bar (brought to you by the same people behind Tribe Boxing Studio) will certainly be up your alley. Specialising in delicious dairy-free, blended-to-order drinks that use real fruit and vegetables, their nutrient-free options range from smoothie bowls to handcrafted smoothies.
For starters, the Black Sesame Summer (RM16) is a refreshing bestseller using black sesame, blueberries, bananas, and (vegan-friendly) home-made almond milk, with a summer berry jam base and raw honey. There are also local flavours incorporated into their menu. For instance, Pina Malaya (RM12) is a cooler made from pineapples, limau kasturi and coconut milk. If you're a health junkie who's keen on all things rich in vitamins and antioxidants, give Dragon Fuel a try. This smoothie combines the antioxidant powers of pineapples and dragonfruit with sweet strawberries and potassium-rich bananas. Working from home just got a lot sweeter (and healthier).

9. Underscore Coffee
Underscore Coffee's seasonal single-origin coffees are, as the team describes, "from different coffee roasters, much like how a sushi chef chooses their seasonal fish to showcase". The Ethiopian Konga is exceptionally juicy with bursts of dried fruits on black with creamy, floral notes of biscuits and wafers. For those who appreciate high-quality coffee with fine acidity, their single-origin Papua New Guinea comes highly recommended. This coffee is super creamy with notes of cherry tomatoes and flavours of banana milk and yoghurt.
Underscore also has four types of cold brews. The first is the Classic White Brew with a smooth chocolatey, nutty, "Neslo-like" taste. It contains brown sugar and cow's milk. Next is the Classic Underscore Brew, a selection that is easy to drink for beginners, using a Brazillian and Indonesian blend for a smooth and delicate taste. For serious coffee drinkers, try out the So Black. This single-origin drink has a range of complex flavours, including a profile that the team describes as "a fruit bomb—Ribena-ish and wine-ish". Lastly, the Superstrong White is not for the weak. This beverage is an upgrade to the classic white brew with three times the coffee dosage and strength intensity.
Bonus: Underscore Coffee also serves up some fantastic food to go along with those drinks. They have a selection of baked confections such as fudgy dark chocolate brownies, butter loaf cake slices and a range of delicious custard tarts. When it comes to something sweet and savoury, try their Boss Eggs On Toast or the Sea Salt Kaya Butter Toast, which uses preservative-free home-made kaya.

10. Ruits Juices
According to Ruits Juices, regularly drinking vitamin C helps strengthens your body's natural defences. Vitamin C contains powerful antioxidants that encourage the production of white blood cells, which help the body fight infections. Plus, a juice high in vitamins helps improve metabolism while maintaining the strength of bones and teeth. If that hasn't convinced you to switch from a sugary drink to a healthy (and delicious) cold-pressed juice, we're not sure what will. It's proven that sugar from fruits and vegetables reduces cravings because it is naturally occurring and better than processed sugars. When it comes to a great range of juices, Ruits has just about any combination you can imagine, from the vitamin C-packed Wake Me Up (made from oranges, pineapples, mango and grapefruit) to Warrior, which is made from orange, carrot and ginger. The latter is said to improve your digestive system, reduce inflammation, and relieve the body of a cold or flu. If you are keen to try one of Ruits' premium juices, go for the Royal Flush. Made from Valencia oranges, apples, turmeric and pineapples, this combination is filled with vitamin c and antioxidants to aid digestion and reduce inflammation.
Ruits Juices aims to ensure that juices are as fresh as possible. All juices are encouraged to be pre-ordered at least two days beforehand. Juices last a maximum of 12 days from the delivery date. If you return 20 bottles, you get one bottle free in your next delivery.
