Yves Saint Laurent has just announced the departure of their creative director, Hedi Slimane for the second time. The French designer designed the men’s collections from 1996-2000, departing to join Dior Homme. In 2012, he rejoined Yves Saint Laurent for another four year stint and was responsible for what the brand’s holding company Kering describes as a “complete repositioning of the brand.”
Slimane was the subject of much controversy: despite revenues catapulting 37.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2015, many questioned his decision to rebrand (the YSL logo altered to become simply, Saint Laurent), and his skinny silhouettes modelled on teenage rock’n’ rollers that seemed to reference his own work at Dior Homme became the topic of much criticism. In a joint statement with Saint Laurent, Francois Henri-Pinault, CEO of Kering said, “I am very grateful to Hedi Slimane, and the whole Yves Saint Laurent team, for having set the path that the house has successfully embraced, and which will grant longevity to this legendary brand.”
