Oscars 2020: What the celebs wore to the red carpet

The most highly anticipated award show of the season is finally here—The 92nd Academy Awards! More well known as the Oscars, the awards show has a long legacy and history awarding the highest accolade to the performing arts finest. Held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Hollywood’s finest showed up to the red carpet equipped with their A-game.

Janelle Monae looked like a knight in shining armour in a hooded crystal-lacquered silk lamé ball gown by Ralph Lauren. We love a fashion risk and Monae is slaying it! And speaking of risks, Kristen Wiig stepped up her game in Valentino Haute Couture. The ruffled red dress is already receiving the meme treatment. The consensus—Lasagna dress. Jokes aside, we called the glove moment!

10-year old Julia Butters was pretty in pink at her first Oscars appearance in a custom Christian Siriano outfit. Modelled after her own sketch, the two-piece number consisted of a ruffled button-down with a skirt and sash. The bedazzled spherical clutch was the finishing touch (and she managed to sneak in a sandwich in there, too.)

The BAFTAs efforts in producing a sustainable red carpet was continued by Margot Robbie, who chose to wear vintage Chanel to the red carpet. The black dress was originally from Chanel’s Haute Couture 1994 collection—you can distinguish good design when it can be worn to a major event 26 years later and it still looks timeless.

Natalie Portman also chose to make a statement wearing a Dior cape from the Spring/Summer 2018 Couture collection. The edges of the cape were embroidered with names of female directors that she felt were overlooked. Among the names were Greta Gerwig (for Little Women), Alma Har’el (for Honey Boy and Lulu Wang (for The Farewell). On the red carpet, she tells LA TimesAmy Kaufman, “I wanted to recognise the women that were not recognised for their incredible work this year, in my subtle way”.
