See the beauty of Dior through the brushstrokes of Mats Gustafson

Before glossies and studio photography, fashion—couture or pret-a-porter—was disseminated through works of illustration. But since the medium fell out of vogue in the second half of the twentieth century, the art form has faded to near obsolescence.

Dior has always appreciated the artistic expression—evident in collaborations between Mr. Christian Dior himself with the renown ’40s illustrator, René Gruau on advertising campaigns for the brand. Fast forward to 2012, Mats Gustafson, a Swedish illustrator, was chosen by Dior to recreate the magic of the previous century.

From the very first issue of Dior Magazine and in every edition since, the fashion drawings of Gustafson have delivered unique interpretations on the maison’s creations. The Dior woman, clad nuanced and romantic brushstrokes, relays fresh perspective on silhouettes and surface, at times, even movement.

The bound compilation will feature Mats Gustafson’s captivating pieces in watercolour, pastels, and collage, alongside a feature written by Tim Blanks on the revered relationship between artist and couture house.
