For the modern bride: Alternative wedding dress ideas

So you said yes and you’re getting hitched! The next commitment you need to think about is one that will also stick with you forever—the dress. The British royal family have been responsible for some of the most memorable gowns and veils this century has seen. If big ball gowns and mermaid trains aren’t exactly up your alley, you may want to consider breaking out of traditional bridal silhouettes. (Bianca Jagger in a Saint Laurent Le Smoking Jacket and Yoko Ono in a capped sleeve mini dress come to mind.)

Pick clothes that make you most comfortable and at ease. And if you’re an unconventional bride, chances are you wouldn’t want a run-of-the-mill wedding dress either. Ahead, 5 all-white looks for you to start on.

SUIT UP

If there was ever a best time for a woman to be wearing the pants, it’d be on her wedding day. An all-white suit exudes a strong and silent sense of confidence, which is exactly what you’ll need when you make that lifelong commitment.

BOHO CHIC

Breezy peasant dresses are ideal for the easy-going free spirit. The relaxed silhouette is the perfect match for an outdoor wedding for major hippie vibes. Pair with cowbow boots or trousers underneath for a sartorial twist.

KEEPIN’ IT CASUAL

…is the total opposite of what you’ll be doing that day when you exchange your vows. Reset the balance in comfortable yet elevated separates or chic cocktail dresses. This laid-back approach works well on the ROM day.

POST-MODERN BRIDE

All of the options above ‘too basic’ for you? Take it to the next level in extreme looks that is bound to turn heads even before you walk down the aisle. A hint of black edges up an all-white look, or skip the pants and go ahead with a tailored dress shirt and skin-tight and see-through lace-up boots.

FUZZY FEELINGS

If you’re planning on a destination wedding, remember to layer up if you’re going to be doing the ceremony in winter. The final cherry on the (wedding) cake? A wedding hat to swap out of once you toss the veil.
