Why Meghan Markle is our favourite 9-5 style star

A grand wedding and handful of official appearances later, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex is already making headlines for her outfit choices. While her sister-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge, is recognised for her feminine style picks (think coat-dresses, flowy dresses and sturdy pumps), Meghan’s style is functional yet tinged with workwear references, such as trouser suits with matching tote bags.

While some naysayers have pointed out the incongruity in Meghan’s wardrobe picks (i.e. wearing a denim dress to a polo event at the height of summer), we laud the duchess for her practical choices that would make excellent ensembles for the workplace. A few style lessons to learn from the royal member include: Go with block colours over vivid prints/embroidery to make a stylish (but not OTT) statement, as she had in a sprightly yellow dress by  Brandon Maxwell at the Commonwealth Youth Forum in London, and a green top and skirt by Givenchy during her visit to Dublin.

Play with silhouettes in neutral shades such as a trench dress (by Nonie), cape frock (by Givenchy), or even a skirt suit (by Prada) for a formal aesthetic without looking overly stuffy. We also love her penchant for different necklines, including boat (Dior Couture), square (Emilia Wickstead), and off-shoulder (Carolina Herrera)—perfect for a boardroom-to-the-bar look, all you have to do is throw on a blazer and you’re good to go!
