Inside Tory Burch’s ode to iconic English interior designer, David Hicks for SS18

What do Tory Burch and the legendary interior designer David Hicks have in common? Their mutual love for pattern, colour and joie de vivre, that is. For Spring/Summer 2018, the designer channelled her admiration towards the iconic interior designer into the collection, with bright and bold pieces which are inspired by his work. Through her friendship with his son, Ashley Hicks, the designer managed to gain access to his library—original scrapbooks that are filled with his signature use of eye-catching hues and contemporary patterns.

Its SS18 runway show—held at the garden of the Cooper Hewitt Museum in Carnegie Hill—started off in a muted colour palette, before the bursts of poppy red, tangerine and mustard yellow gave some joyful juxtaposition. Prints wise, there were kaleidoscopic and geometric motifs, and florals (iris, to represent David Hicks’ love of gardens and Moroccan patterns), but taking centre stage, are the classic stripes that were incorporated into the ready-to-wear pieces and accessories. The slouchy and relaxed silhouettes pulled all the striking details together, radiating that sense of ease without forgetting the feminine finish.
