All the details about Meghan Markle’s Oprah interview outfit

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard and read about, or watched Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey. From concerns within the royal family over their son Archie’s skin colour to the fight with Kate Middleton which left Meghan in tears, the episode, which aired yesterday, was filled with many bombshell revelations. But that aside, the ex-royal’s fashion choice for the tell-all has also been making waves for a few reasons.

It’s been long believed that the royal family often wore outfits with hidden meanings behind them, and in this sit-down with Oprah, the internet, too, thinks that Meghan is sending a few subtle messages to the world. The Duchess of Sussex wore a black Giorgio Armani silk wrap dress that costs US$4,700 (approx. RM19,305), and it features a V-neck and white lotus flowers on one side.

In many different cultures and religions (such as Hinduism and Buddhism), the bloom symbolises “purity, enlightenment, self-regeneration, and rebirth”. Meghan’s fashion choice may be a reflection of the new chapter they’re embarking on as she described her time as a royal “almost unsurvivable”. The couple stepped back as senior royals last year, and they confirmed that they will not be returning as working members of the royal family back in January.

Aside from her dress, Meghan also donned an equally symbolic piece of jewellery during the interview. Adorning her wrist was the Cartier diamond tennis bracelet that belonged to the late Princess Diana “so Diana could be with them”, according to People.

That’s not it. The Duchess of Sussex’s ensemble also drew comparisons to another controversial royal—Wallis Simpson. In one of her portraits before she became Duchess of Windsor, she can be seen sporting a similar V-neck black dress with floral prints emblazoned all over. In 1936, Prince Harry’s great uncle King Edward VIII abdicated the throne to marry the American socialite and divorcée, and a few Twitter users have noted the similarities between both royal couples’ lives.

Although Meghan’s Armani dress is sold out, if you’d like to emulate her style, below, we highlight some of the royal’s favourite accessories, from her Aquazzura heels (also worn during the Oprah interview) to her Gabriela Hearst handbags.
