Breaking News: Alber Elbaz resigns from Lanvin

October 2015 may very well go down as one of the saddest months in fashion history. Less than a week after Raf Simons’ shock announcement of his resignation from Dior, Israeli designer Alber Elbaz is also said to be stepping down from his post as Creative Director of Lanvin after a wildly successful 14 year run. Elbaz was a recent recipient of the Superstar Award at the Fashion Group International’s Night of the Stars, where he was presented the title by actress Meryl Streep.

During his acceptance speech, the 54-year-old designer commented on the tremendous pressure designers face with having to come up with numerous collections a year, disallowing adequate time for creative incubation—a problem which may have prompted his contemporary, Simons, to leave Dior. “We designers started out as couturiers with dreams, with intuitions and with feelings. We started with ‘What do women want; what do women need? What can I do for women to make their lives better and easier? How can I make a woman more beautiful?’,” he lamented. “And now we have to become image makers, making sure it looks good in pictures. The screen has to scream baby—that’s the rule. Loudness is the new thing. Loudness is the new cool, and not only in fashion. I prefer whispering: I think it goes deeper and lasts longer.” Elbaz’s resignation has rumours flying of a possible position at Dior. We wish you all the best Mr. Elbaz.
