Once a fashion faux pas, suits and sneakers have slowly become a staple pairing for the modern men, thanks to the popularity of the athleisure trend and the array of cool kicks around. If the recent street style snaps from Men’s Fashion Week is anything to go by, the suit-and-sneakers combo is the hottest menswear look of the moment, and we’re not going to be convinced otherwise. There’s something about the effortlessly cool allure that a pair adds to a tailored suit, not to mention how comfy they feel compared to the usual leather dress shoes. And that doesn’t only apply to men. That being said, there are several rules to rocking the trend, as not every pairing works.
Learn a few tips from these street style stars:
The style
For beginners, a pair of white kicks never fail. And judging from look #3, #8 and #14, they’ve already got that down pat. If you want to take things up a notch, added elements such as feather details and emblazoned logos à la look #16 will lend a statement-making finish. Aside from that, another fail-proof option is Converse sneakers, thanks to the flat soles. Check out look #9 and #10 for more style inspo.
The length and fit
While a more tailored fit will give off a sleeker and suave feel, nowadays, oversized blazers and baggy trousers are all the rage too, and we’re also a fan. Look #4, and #15 are proof. If you’re sporting the combo to a more formal and dressy event, a pair of tapered trousers-spotted in look #6 and #11—will be more appropriate.
The pairing
Now that suits can be worn for almost any occasion, the pairing doesn’t have to be restricted to only shirts and ties. Sometimes, all you need is a plain T-shirt like look #1 and #12, although a casual button-down—worn untucked-like look #2 and #13 adds that bit more ‘tude to your overall get-up.
