Ever since then-joint creative directors Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri introduced it in 2010, the hardware—reminiscent of the bugnato seen on Roman Palazzos—has become one of the brand’s best-selling collections, and a decade later, Piccioli continues to champion the iconic details by giving them a contemporary update.

First spotted in the Italian Maison’s Resort 2021 collection in the form of The Shoulder bag, the new hardware definitely piqued our interest then, but it’s the Spring/Summer 2021 offerings that unleashed its full appeal. Enter the Valentino Garavani Roman Stud Top Handle bag, a new design that’s already making its way to It-status.

Crafted from soft lambskin nappa leather that gives it a plush finish, each piece is adorned with 28 maxi studs that are applied—by hand—on the rhombus patterned quilting. Available in two sizes and five hues this season (from refreshing ‘lime sorbet’ to classic black and white), there’ll be a combination that tickles your fancy, though we recommend going for the smaller size (in any colour) for that playful allure. To elevate its versatility, we love how the top-handle comes with not one but two detachable straps—in leather and chain—that allow you to carry it in different ways, further proving that it’s a great day-to-night pick.
