At Bottega Veneta, the focus was all on the shoulder. For Autumn/Winter 2017, Tomas Maier presented a dressed-up, polished collection: lean silhouettes with bold shoulders, evoking power-women determination. However, they are far from ’80s glam but instead, slick and tailored. The shoulder treatments were sent down the runway in different variations, from rounded shapes on a bodycon turtleneck and shaggy-goat coats to arch-like ones on belted dresses and deep V-neck smoking jumpsuits. Maier did not just stop at power shoulders; silk dress in dusty shades, some with Lurex and leather suits complete the collection.
It seems like it is not just New York Fashion Week with protest collections. In Milan, Angela Missoni is an addition to the growing list of designers taking a stand. For the Autumn/Winter collection, models wore pink pussy hats (caps with kitty ears) during the finale. The designer even put the accessory, symbol of feminist outrage over the Trump presidency, in the brand’s signature zigzag knits on every seat at the show venue. It was not the only political symbol incorporated in the multi-coloured collection; a similar pink triangle adopted by the AIDs union, Act Up as well as the Venus symbol, spotted on chunky sweaters. There were also multiple layers of graphic knit, fur vests, tinsel boa, and lots of tweed and checks. If we were attending the Women’s March, there is no question that our outfits would be off this collection.
