PFW SS16: Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld knows how to create a spectacle (perfect social media fodder, of course) and this season for Chanel S/S ’16, he did not disappoint. From art gallery to supermarket and then a brasserie, Karl transformed the Grand Palais into Terminal 2C of the very sleek Paris-Cambon airport, complete with metal detactors and X-ray machines at the entrance (or where those real?).

Beneath departure boards that showed cities where Chanel has brought their travelling shows to – Seoul to Salzburg and Dallas, were check-in counters complete with baggage conveyor belts and staff kitted out in Chanel Airlines uniform.  Metal terminal chairs served as a sort of front row, where Cara Delevingne sat with girlfriend St Vincent, and Hudson Kroenig.

Here at the Chanel airport, passengers transiting were the likes of Edie Campbell, Kendall Jenner, Binx Walton and Mica Arganaraz dressed in shades of blue, white and red, veering towards Air France territory but no scuffle at this chic airport, just brisk walking in and out of gate no. 5, aided by sporty, Teva-like sandals, some with blinking LED lights around the soles, and chunky, low-heeled sandals in cool, metallic silver, another key colour this season.

This being Chanel, tweeds of course made a mandatory appearance, alongside chevron, arrow and airplane prints and dresses with departure board prints on them. The vibe was sporty (bomber jackets and sweatshirts tied around the waist), with a dose of attitude as seen in the snapbacks worn backwards. A styling trick to try now: wear your gloves on the wrist by putting a statement cuff over to hold them in.

But of course the key accessory this season had to be the luggage bags that came quilted, printed and in hard case – those and the handheld trolley clutch bag are bound to be the first items guaranteed to fly off the shelves.
