Joseph Altuzarra was inspired by his father’s roots; historically, the Basque people were of-the-earth homesteaders—sheep herders, ranchers, fishermen and merchants. Burlap, linen and the earthen terracotta tones of Spanish ceramics were transmogrified into skirts with high-slits and sensual necklines that had unknowingly fallen off the shoulders: a kind of unconscious sexiness Altuzarra has mastered.
Borrowing from the peasant shoe of the region, Altuzarra refined the humble espadrille with a heel and lace-up details. A beautiful croc handbag was toned down with the crafty, homespun appeal of braided leather handles.
