Dior Haute Couture Spring 2017 is a fairytale come true

Mention haute couture, and ethereal gowns in a fantasy setting instantly come to mind. For Spring 2017, Dior explored haute couture season in the truest sense of the word, zeroing in on a whimsical sophistication. The first couture collection for the French luxury house, Maria Grazia Chiuri offered pure escapism with a breathtaking set and equally, if not more, beautiful clothes.

Drawing on the founder’s love of gardens, Chiuri had one installed on the grounds of the Musée Rodin. Showgoers arrived through an outdoor maze constructed from hedges into a mirrored cube. Inside, the catwalk is carpeted with thick, fragrant moss with its edge lined by green velvet cushions for guests (that included Kirsten Dunst and Diane Krueger) to sit on. Centering the garden is a wishing tree hung with crystals, beads, ribbons, fairy lights and tarot regalia.

The show opened with monochrome evening suits, which Chiuri referenced tuxedo-wearing men. Deriving from a Dior icon silhouette, the ‘Bar’ jacket, sometimes with caped shoulders, were worn with voluminous culottes that closely resembled skirts-a play on the masculine-feminine tailoring. The house’s other prominent silhouette, the ‘New Look’ full-skirted dress was honoured too; Chiuri softened the corseted structure with supple fan pleating to create peplums, swirls in skirts and volumes in sleeves.

After the tailored looks, came the magnificent, almost-surreal eveningwear. Models were sent down the runway in gowns sprinkled with sparkling tarot symbols, skirts with silk flowers artfully pressed flat in between the layers of the tulle as well as gloriously embellished tiered frocks. The whimsicality did not stop there—thanks to Stephen Jones’ fanciful headdresses, creating a dark and mysterious mood within the exquisite collection. The black net dragonfly masks, tall feathered and flower headpieces add plenty of drama, perfecting the otherworldliness element in Chiuri’s extravagant visual tale.
