5 Things to know about Kim Jones’ Dior debut

1. As mentioned earlier, the brand is collaborating with Kaws this season, and what better way to kick-start it than with a 10-metre tall Kaws ‘BFF’ statue located right in the middle of the set? Staged at the Garde Républicaine (which took four days to set up), the figure is created with 70,000 peonies and roses, with a base that is made from moss. The statue can be seen holding a “Bobby bottle”, a perfume which shape is inspired by Monsieur Dior’s beloved dog.

2. The collab saw Dior’s iconic bee motif given a cheeky update to a more animated version, and a few models held the Kaws ‘BFF’ soft toys which were dressed in Baby Dior outfits.

3. “Dior, by Dior”. In the brand’s show notes, Kim Jones revealed that the Dior Homme Spring/Summer 2019 collection is a dual tribute—one to the French fashion house, and the other, to Monsieur Dior himself. The overall looks were given that bit of feminine touch in less structured fabrics and soft shapes. Prints-wise, there were toile du jouy motifs derived from the brand’s first boutique, and floral patterns which echoed the founder’s love of nature, peppered on outerwear, shirts and jumpsuits. Pink and grey hues were used throughout, some on the Tailleur Oblique blazers which will be a red-carpet favourite for sure, alongside pops of yellow and blue. Jones’ signature streetwear flair was also present in the collection, albeit not much, seen on parkas and shorts, paired with socks-and-sneakers. Have a look at some of the ensembles below:

(Fun fact: Kim Jones invited Prince Nikolai of Denmark (look 1) to open the show as a tribute to his own heritage and Dior’s love for royalty.)

4. Also inspired by the brand’s heritage, are the new accessories introduced. Since its revival in the womenswear accessories few seasons back, Kim Jones is bringing the saddle bag to the menswear department, offering it in the form of a cross-body and backpack. But arguably the most loved of them all, are the belt bags that strike the right balance between cute and cool. Giving the looks that extra shine, were the array of dog-bone pieces by Dior’s new jewellery designer, Yoon Ah from Ambush, and the CD buckles—spotted on belts and caps—by designer Matthew Williams.

5. Aside from celebrities such as the face of Dior Homme, Robert Pattinson, and singers Lenny Kravitz, and Oliver and Romy from The XX, the show was flocked with industry heavyweights. Fellow designers Karl Lagerfeld, Haider Ackermann, Victoria Beckham (who’s accompanied by her son, Brooklyn); supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell; and Colette founders Colette Roussaux and Sarah Andelman watched the show from the FROW.
