Everything you need to know about the H&M Conscious Exclusive 2018 collection

H&M is back with its seventh edition of the H&M Conscious Exclusive line, comprising of up to 40 pieces that are as sustainable as they are stylish. This year, aside from introducing its latest fabric innovation, the brand took inspiration from 20^th century Swedish artists Karin and Carl Larsson, whereby “every Swedish family has a reproduction of Karl’s paintings in their home”, according to its Creative Advisor, Ann-Sofie Johansson. The duo’s tapestries, needlework and prints are incorporated into the collection—translated into floral jacquards, abstract embroideries and prints.

 

One of the highlights of the collection this year, are the two new materials which are introduced—Econyl and recycled silver. The former—a 100% regenerated nylon fibre made from fishnets and other nylon waste, while the latter (although not made available in Malaysia) are accessories made from old candlesticks, sterling silver flatware, coins and scrap jewellery. Alongside other head-turning pieces such as an embroidered pantsuit, and a white Econyl sleeveless gown with organic cotton embroidery that can be a (sustainable) wedding-gown alternative, our favourite? The green floral jacquard dress that is a flirty and fashionable pick to a night event.

For its campaign, the brand tapped Christy Turlington Burns as its face of the collection this year, alongside up-and-coming faces such as Giedrë Dukauskaitë and Aamito Lagum to showcase that diversity, and that it can be worn many ways by different women. Ann-Sofie also revealed the supermodel’s big interest towards sustainability makes her a good role model. Christy says, “Ever since I learned about this collection I’ve been really impressed by what it stands for and the designs are equally appealing. Fashion and sustainability is no longer a contradiction in terms and I think re-using and recycling is an important initiative across fashion. It’s really inspiring to see such fashion-forward designs being made from recycled materials.”
