The Lady Dior is one of the French fashion house’s most iconic bags, but did you know it was originally called the Chouchou when it was first launched in 1994? It wasn’t until France’s then-First Lady, Bernadette Chirac, gifted Princess Diana with the bag that it took off. The Princess of Wales was reportedly so in love with the carrier that she bought every design available at that time, and carried it along to her numerous public events. Soon after, the bag was renamed the ‘Lady Dior’ as an homage to her. While the classics are made of padded stitched leather that’s inspired by the Napoléon III chairs used by Monsieur Dior to greet his customers on the day of his show, for Cruise 2019, Maria Grazia Chiuri gave the bags a Latin American twist to complement the collection, inspired by the Mexican female rodeo drivers called the escaramuzas. Some of the most eye-catching pieces include one with silkscreen painted Toile du Jouy motif (we love the pop of gold thanks to the hardware), and one embroidered with black leather flowers that exudes a hint of edge. To give it a more casual yet modern update, jazz it up with the addition of a thick strap—the Dior Oblique canvas remains our favourite.
