5 SS23 collections with quirky looks that took the spotlight

Fashion week is that time of the year where designers get to unveil their latest work, to show the world their artistic capabilities and the exceptional craftsmanship that defines each Maison. Pieces boasting intricate details and the finest of fabrics roll out on the runway every season, constructed by brilliant artists who weaved their blood, sweat, and tears into every seam. It’s given that the amount of hard work, the extravagance and grandeur are arguably the most momentous aspects of a collection, but who’s to say we can’t have some fun as spectators? After all, art is boundless and creativity presents itself in many forms, including orb dresses—and we’re here for it! With the SS23 shows now done and dusted, we highlight some of the best quirky looks that took the spotlight this season.

Moschino

Diving right in with Moschino’s inflatable collection, it surely made a splash! When you have a dinner date at 8PM and a pool party at 10PM, a true fashionista is never unprepared for both. With Jeremy Scott’s creative direction, it’s no shocking news that inflation, of all things, was the inspiration behind the collection. Who knew something as dreadful as inflation could be so delightfully embodied?

JW Anderson

It wouldn’t be a Jonathan Anderson collection without his whimsical ideas, and the JW Anderson SS23 collection would only extend that reputation. Models were sent down the runway in garments of all forms, including metallic and shimmering orbs, upside down baggy sweaters, a halter-neck top decked in retro keycaps, as well as dresses fashioned as fish in plastic bags.

Loewe

It goes without saying that Jonathan Anderson is especially unparalleled at imbuing surrealist codes into his creations, materialising bizarre dream-like concepts in ways that are both playful and experimental. From heels entirely engulfed in deflated balloons to Minecraft-inspired ensembles to Minnie Mouse pumps, Anderson upped the ante in the most graceful fashion and quirky silhouettes were aplenty on Loewe’s SS23 runway.

Balenciaga

The Balenciaga we know today is distinctive in Demna’s bold, eccentric designs that only gets more audacious by the year. While the peculiarities of Balenciaga’s SS23 collection is a whole other conversation on its own, the spiral scarves and bags made of stuffed animals certainly stood out amongst the muddy post-apocalyptic scene.

GCDS

Nothing screams quirky like Spongebob Squarepants, and much like the Bikini Bottom, there’s a lot going on in GCDS’s SS23 collection. Dubbed as the ‘Alien Disco’ (which basically speaks for itself), creative director Giuliano Calza played with lively colours and intricate embellishments on creative silhouettes that range anywhere from motocross gear to skimpy swimwear—Spongebob and Patrick approved, of course.
