Pop Culture Catch-Up: Girls Generation makes a comeback, Chrissy Teigen is expecting, and more

Girls Generation (SNSD) is ‘Forever 1’

In celebration of SNSD’s 15th anniversary, the queens of K-pop have returned with a new single titled Forever 1 after a five-year hiatus to pursue their solo careers. Since their debut single Into the New World was released 15 years ago, the girls have shaken the grounds of K-pop as one of the most prominent acts and the earliest stars who crossed over to the west. The upbeat single takes a spot on their seventh studio album of the same name, written and produced by longtime SM Entertainment collaborator Kenzie.

Nearly two years since Chrissy Teigen and her husband John Legend had suffered the devastating loss of their stillborn son at 20 weeks of pregnancy, a new chapter has begun for the couple as they are expecting another baby on the way!

Teigen had been open about her public pregnancy loss in 2020, sharing the painful experience on Medium in great detail. But things are finally looking up for the two as Teigen announced the exciting news on Instagram with two photos of herself visibly pregnant, saying, “The last few years have been a blur of emotions to say the least, but joy has filled our home and hearts again.”

“I don’t think I’ll ever walk out of an appointment with more excitement than nerves but so far, everything is perfect and beautiful and I’m feeling hopeful and amazing,” she continued.

Jason Leong to join Just For Laughs Montreal 2022 Comedy Festival (JFL)

Doctor turned comedian and content creator Jason Leong has recently been selected to be one of the 10 comedians for JFL’s first ever New Faces International Showcase. He is the only Southeast Asian comedian to be featured in this year’s line-up and the third Malaysian to perform at the biggest comedy event worldwide, following Ronny Chieng and Phil Wang.

While his transition from a medical professional to a professional joke-teller was certainly a bold jump, Leong appears to be on the right path. His global success from the 2020 Netflix special Hashtag Blessed, two sold-out shows at the Esplanade Theatre in Singapore, and a sold-out run at Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2022 has already proven so, and this upcoming gig in Montreal only shows a brighter future for him ahead.

The president also shared a series of behind-the-scenes pictures from the ceremony with more smiles from the star (she knows what the fans want!). Osmani wrote in Albanian: “Aside from being a world-class and a once-in-a-generation musician, you are also a role model for many girls and women across the world as a forthright and conscientious activist. But above all, what you have done for the people of Kosovo, in raising awareness of the Republic of Kosovo is unmatched and truly invaluable.”

Four Malaysian artists celebrate Hong Kong through art

In celebration of Hong Kong’s rich culture and arts, the Hong Kong Tourism Board brought together 18 Southeast Asian artists for the Arts in HK with S.E.A artists campaign—an extension of the year-long Arts in Hong Kong. The campaign features talents across Southeast Asia, four of which are Malaysians including illustrator Chong Fei Giap from Loka Made, embroidery artist Anni Tai, painter Kendrick Ng, and coffee artist Dududedoodles. Artworks are not limited to the canvas as there are a diverse variety of genres such as paintings, digital illustrations, pottery, embroidery, sand art, and more.

“As an international arts and culture hub, Hong Kong is excited to engage, nurture and develop the next generation of local artists across the region, while giving them a platform to showcase their talents to the world. By amplifying the potential of artists through this initiative, we hope to positively shape and empower artists within the local arts community in the region,” said Raymond Chan, Regional Director of Southeast Asia at Hong Kong Tourism Board.
