Pop Culture Catch-Up: The Oscars are postponed to April 2021, Kim Kardashian to host her own crime podcast on Spotify and more

Hello, pop culture vultures! Here’s another round-up of the latest news in the entertainment circle you might have missed:

The Oscars to be delayed until April 2021

The film industry’s biggest night will be postponed for the first time in almost 40 years. Earlier this week, it was announced that the ceremony, originally scheduled for February 28, is now pushed back a further two months to April 25.

While this might not be the greatest news for movie buffs, industry directors could not be more thrilled with the announcement. Before the date switch, several Oscar contenders were thinking of bailing out for the 2020/21 season in favour of the 2022 Oscars due to narrow time constraints. Movies such as Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and Baz Luhrman’s untitled Elvis film would all benefit from the extra time and could very well now be in the running.

Nominations for the Oscars will be announced on March 15 2021.

Love is in the air for Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly

The stunning Transformers actress has been spending time with rapper Machine Gun Kelly (real name Colson Baker) a lot lately. Both met on the set of a film that has since halted productions due to the pandemic but that didn’t stop the duo from getting to know each other better off-camera–they even dropped a music video while quarantining together.

Megan Fox split from longtime beau Brian Austin Green when the news of their divorce was announced last month. Fox and MGK even showed off their quarantine activities with a steamy music video for the rapper’s latest single ‘Bloody Valentine’.

The series sequel to Love, Simon just aired and you should check it out

The 2018 film Love, Simon was a huge hit across the world for its LGBT representation as Simon Spier grappled with his sexuality when he began to fall for his mysterious male pen pal. It was a poignant and uplifting film, with especially touching speeches from Simon’s parents, played by Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel. But as we know, coming out stories are not the same for everyone and this is exactly why the film creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger have come together again for a series sequel to tackle more of these issues.

In an interview with E! Online, Berger explained, “…when thinking about doing it as a show, it was really exciting to us to have the opportunity to show someone else’s story, someone else’s way that it looked for them. Hopefully, Victor’s story will now resonate with a whole new set of people that maybe couldn’t relate to the sort of way Simon’s story went on a personal level.”

Love, Victor comes just in time for Pride Month so stream the whole series now on Hulu.

Kim Kardashian to host her own criminal justice podcast on Spotify

Want to catch Lawyer Kim in action? Well, you still can’t but you can definitely hear her. Lawyer Kardashian West is back again to show off her newfound lawyering skills in an exclusive podcast on Spotify, according to The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.

If you didn’t know, Kim Kardashian has been a huge advocate for criminal justice reform and has been studying to be a lawyer through an apprenticeship program. She has been extensively involved in The Innocence Project, a nonprofit organisation that works to exonerate wrongly convicted individuals through DNA testing.

While the launch date has yet to be released, the podcast will spotlight the investigative work of Lori Rothschild Ansaldi as she investigates the case of Kevin Keith who was convicted of three murders in 1994. Both will co-host and co-produce the Spotify podcast.

Park Bo Gum turns 27 and decides to gift fans instead for his birthday

He is not dubbed the ‘Nation’s Boyfriend’ for nothing. When South Korean actor Park Bo Gum turned 27 on June 16, fans were pleasantly surprised when they found out they were getting a gift of their own.

His agency, Blossom Entertainment, posted on Instagram revealing that the actor has prepared a song dedicated to his fans titled ‘All My Love’. He worked with popular singer Sam Kim to produce, write and compose the song.

The post reads, “Aligning with his debut anniversary, the song will be released through music services all over the world on August 10, and the single album will be released on August 12 in Korea and Japan simultaneously. The design and tracklist will be the same in the albums released in Korea and Japan…and the album will be sold in limited quantities in Korea. More detailed information will be released through future announcements. Please show lots of love to “All My Love,” which contains the actor’s feelings towards fans.”

Blackpink shows off their swagger in latest comeback teaser videos

Yesterday, Blackpink’s Jennie and Rose were the firsts to reveal teaser videos for their comeback titled ‘How You Like That’ in white outfits from their first round of title posters. (And no, before you click on the video, your earphones are working just fine.)

Today, the other half of the quartet joined in contrasting all-black looks. While the previous two members are grooving to squeaky TV-static noise, Lisa and Jisoo are strutting it out to blaring march-style beats, giving fans a small taste of the highly-anticipated anthem.
