Sophie Turner sues Joe Jonas—plus other pop culture news

September has been a *wild* month in the world of pop culture. Recently, Hollywood has been hit with a couple of unfortunate divorce announcements from fan-favourite couples. Meanwhile, Usher takes on the Super Bowl and Halle Berry is beefing with Drake (yes, you read that right). Read ahead for the biggest pop culture news you might have missed.

Usher is headlining this year’s Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show

That’s right, the R&B icon will be performing at one of the biggest sporting events in America! Known for its huge production and an incredible lineup of performers, the highly anticipated Halftime Show will see the one and only Usher grace the stage with his classic hits. Commemorating the news and the 20-year anniversary of Usher’s Confessions, Pt.II, Apple Music released a series of short videos, each with a snippet of the iconic music video, where a young Usher receives a life-changing phone call. Fans have been speculating who was on the other end of the call but now you know—it’s Usher from the future! Usher will take centre stage at Allegiant Stadium on 11 February 2024.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner divorce after four years of marriage

On 3 September, news broke out that one of the Internet’s favourite couples was splitting. Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner started dating in 2016 and married in 2019. They currently have two daughters. Naturally, many fans were devastated by this as the pair were known for their fun chemistry and sense of humour together.

Jonas was still seen wearing his wedding ring during a Jonas Brothers concert and the Game of Thrones actress was even seen touring with her then-husband just a month prior; however, the singer filed for divorce on 5 September, effectively confirming the split. Since then, the rumour mill has been running rampant on the reason behind the breakup; however, on 6 September, the pair released a statement on their Instagrams stating, “There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision.”

On September 21, Turner filed a lawsuit against Jonas under the grounds that the couple’s children had been wrongfully kept in New York City from “their habitual residence” in England. According to the petition, the pair had made England their permanent home in April and Turner was to take the children back to the UK once she was done filming in the country. It also stated that the actress only found out about the divorce through media outlets. As of now, the lawsuit has demanded the return of their two children back to the UK as the singer would not turn over the children’s passports.

Update: According to court filings on Monday, the couple have agreed that their two daughters reside in America temporarily as the divorce proceeds.

Hugh Jackman and Debora-lee Furness amicably split after 27 years

Maybe mercury really is in retrograde. In another divorce announcement that had people on the Internet exclaiming that love is dead, power couple Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness are parting ways after 27 years. The couple shared the news in an exclusive statement to People on 15 September.

We have been blessed to share almost three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth,” they explained. The couple first met in 1995 on the set of a TV show. Jackman was a newcomer at the age of 27 and Furness was already an established actress at 39 years old at the time. The pair married a year later and adopted two children in 2000 and 2005 respectively.

We know it sounds totally random but stick with us here. The news came about when Drake posted a cover artwork of his new single with SZA titled Slime You Out on Instagram. The picture in question is a very memorable one of Berry getting slimed at the 2012 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. While the photo is licensed by Getty Images and not owned by Berry, the actress took to her own Instagram to share her thoughts a day later with a cryptic message.

In the comments, fans found out that she was indeed talking about Drake and said what he did was “not cool”. According to Berry, the pop star did ask her for permission in which case, she declined; however, Drake went ahead and posted it anyway. The actress further wrote in a reply, “Why ask if you intend to do what you want to do ! That was the f*** you to me. Not cool.” Currently, we’re unsure if Drake will proceed with the artwork for his upcoming album For All the Dogs dropping on 6 October.

That’s right, legendary Hong Kong actor Louis Koo is currently on our shores to film an upcoming movie. Titled Behind The Shadows, the production is the first project under the Malaysian branch of One Cool Group, which has predominantly been promoting movies in Hong Kong since 2013. Expanding into producing TV shows and films across Southeast Asia, Behind The Shadows will also star Malaysian talents such as Yumi Wong, Chan Phei Yong and Auguste Kwan Teik Hooi.

Directed by Jonathan Li, the movie follows a half-baked private detective (played by Koo) who finds himself at the centre of a bizarre murder case. Chrissie Chau stars as his estranged wife. The cast and crew are currently filming in various spots around Kuala Lumpur until mid-October so keep your eyes peeled for the star!
