From a scathing rap war between Kendrick Lamar and Drake to thrilling trailer drops, netizens are abuzz on social media with plenty to discuss. Ahead, get caught up with pop culture’s biggest headlines in the past week. 

 

The feud deepens between Kendrick Lamar and Drake 

In the hip-hop world, all eyes are on Drake and Kendrick Lamar as the two rap legends aim at each other in a series of cutting diss tracks. Following Drake’s almost eight-minute track titled Family Matters released on 3 May, Lamar responded with two diss tracks, Meet the Grahams and Not Like Us, consecutively on 5 May.

While Drake previously suggested in his song that Lamar’s son was fathered by his manager, the Humble rapper also revealed similarly shocking allegations such as Drake hiding a daughter from the world, a substance addiction and involvement with various sex crimes.

 

Madonna breaks the record for most-attended standalone concert in history

Proving her status as a living icon, Madonna breaks the record for having the biggest standalone concert for any artist in history with 1.6 million people in attendance.

On 5 May, the 65-year-old singer held a free concert at Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach as the final stop of her Celebration Tour, commemorating her 40 years in music. Congratulations, Madonna (and here’s to hoping Malaysia is on her radar!).

 

Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso is a certified caffeine hit! 

Carpenter is no stranger to creating viral songs but the singer has actually never had a certified number-one hit—until now. Since the release of Espresso, Carpenter has been enjoying massive success with the song as it currently remains at number one on global Spotify with just under 10 million streams. The breezy summer song is undoubtedly her breakout single and fans couldn’t be happier for her. On 4 May, the singer topped the UK charts, marking the singer’s first official number-one hit in her music career.

 

The Boys welcomes chaos in season four trailer drop

On 4 May, fans finally had their first preview of the highly anticipated fourth season of The Boys—and it’s messy! With Homelander closer than ever to consolidating his power through Victoria Neuman, the stakes have never been higher for Butcher and his team to save the world from the all-power Supes before it’s too late. The Prime Video series premieres on 13 June. 

 

Due Lipa welcomes a new era with Radical Optimism 

Dua Lipa is back! On 3 May, the English-Albanian singer dropped her third studio album, Radical Optimism, much to her fans’ delight. The record contains 11 songs, led by the title track Illusion. The highly awaited album comes four years after her smash success with Future Nostalgia. Upon release, the Houdini singer charted seven songs on the global Spotify chart.

 

Deadpool and Wolverine team up to save the world 

Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine? Yes, please! On 22 April, Marvel fans got their first taste of Deadpool and Wolverine’s chemistry (shall we say bromance?) as butt-kicking partners to save the Multiverse. Reynolds and Jackman first teased the collaboration in September 2022 and MCU enthusiasts could not have been more excited to watch two superhero veterans back on the screen again. Deadpool & Wolverine premieres worldwide on 26 July 2024.
