The best fashion week beauty trends that we actually want to pull off IRL

BRICK IS THE NEW RED

Kate Spade New York, Cushnie

What is it: The new red that’s taking over the runways is wearable, flattering, and utterly charming—tonal makeup in terracotta hues were spotted at Kate Spade New York and Cushnie.

Why we like it: You heard us raving over the monochromatic makeup trend, and it’s safe to say that nothing can quell our love for this effortless look. But what’s even better than a full-on tonal makeup look? Definitely this burnt orange-red shade that’s sweeping AW19 with vigour.

One-colour wonders are miraculous lifesavers for those who refuse to ponder too much about their face colour scheme for the day. It’s safe to say that we’ll be repping this eye-cheek-lip hue with aplomb next season.

SLEPT-IN PASTEL EYES

Sies Marjan, Tibi

What is it: The new trick to looking put-together in five minutes—wearing lovely pastel shades around the eyes and smudge it out (to your heart’s content). Sies Marjan and Tibi had great ideas on how to ace your makeup when you’re running late.

Why we like it: The brightest of eyeshadows can be scary to some of us—who yield the same confidence with makeup brushes as we would with a tractor. But this trend is giving us hope that you don’t need to master the most complicated eye makeup techniques to look this arresting.

Tip: Smudge your favourite pastel eyeshadow on the lower lash lash line or around the corner of the eyelids for a subtle wash of colour. Let your eyes pop by lining the upper lash line with black liner, and follow with coats of mascara.

SKIN IS IN

Cong Tri, Marc Jacobs

What is it: It is perhaps an understatement to say that we can never get enough of the no-makeup makeup look. Backstage at Cong Tri and Marc Jacobs, we’re falling for this stunning look all over again—but for good reason.

The skin looks exceptional—glowing, dewy but not too much, almost translucent, while the brows are groomed to perfection. A smidgen of cream blush and MLBB lip colour are the final touches to complete this look.

Why we like it: For those who didn’t get our above-mentioned ode, this radiant look also screams “LOOK AT THE GLORIOUS STATE OF MY SKIN”. But if blemishes and scarring are the bane of your existence (like most of us, really), fret not.

Tip: Makeup artist Hung Vanngo swears by thoroughly hydrating the skin during skin-prep—including using a mask and serum from Lâncome’s Génifique range, and the Lâncome Absolue Soft Cream before makeup. Follow up with Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation and blurring powder to give your skin the illusion that it’s basically poreless.

FIVE-MINUTE TRICKS TO OPENING UP YOUR EYES

Brandon Maxwell, Brock Collection

What is it: Spidery lashes at Brandon Maxwell and a lazy smoky eye at Brock Collection are testament to the fact that we don’t necessarily need impressive eye makeup to look, well, impressive.

Why we like it: Any makeup trick that gets us out of the door under five minutes is basically in our HG Beauty Tips book.

Tip: In this case, it’s coats and coats (and coats) of mascara for those who have enviously long lashes. If you aren’t well-endowed with lashes, try falsies or draw on some using a black liquid liner. Alternatively, a quick swipe of grey eyeshadow paired with thick eyeliner (both on the upper and lower lash lines) will let your peepers stand out.

THE NEW EVERYDAY HAIRDO

Jonathan Simkhai, Helmut Lang

What is it: Tousled ponytails and damp, slicked-back hair should be our everyday hairdos, especially when it’s looking this chic at Jonathan Simkhai and Helmut Lang.

Why we like it: Contrary to popular belief, it does take a lot of effort to look effortless. But it’s well worth it when you get a one-of-a-kind, low ponytail-braid that’s perfect for your to transition from the boardroom to the bar; or better yet, a polished hairdo with a grunge-y aesthetic via wet, slicked-back tresses.

Tip: Lead stylist Holli Smith at Helmut Lang suggest to use a volumizing spray from the hairline to the ends, then brush hair backwards. Secure the sides with a clip, then blow dry with Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. Wet only the ends of your hair for this look. Also, copious amounts of hairspray will help to keep your locks in place.

RIBBONED BEAUTIES

Veronica Beard, Oscar de la Renta

What is it: Let your natural hair texture shine by cinching your ponytail with a pretty ribbon, spotted at Veronica Beard and Oscar de la Renta.

Why we like it: A hairdo that takes literally a minute (or less) to execute, looks feminine, and doesn’t require a chockfull of products—need we say more? Time to stock up on ribbons of all fabrics and textures—we are quite fond of the ruby red velvet variation at Oscar de la Renta.

Tip: If you have time (and seriously stubborn, super straight locks), add texture to your hair by giving it waves with a curling iron before securing it.

NAIL IT WITH A STATEMENT

Jeremy Scott, Khaite

What is it: Nails bodly printed with alphabets, seen at Jeremy Scott and Khaite

Why we like it: If nail art is way too passé for your liking, try making a statement with nails that you can literally spell with. Snazzy, loud, but not too brash (quite unlike claw tips, IMHO), this is what you need when someone asks you rude questions.

Tip: Suggestions include “IDGAF”, “BYE”, “TTYL” and the like.
