This pro makeup artist shares her go-to tricks for getting runway-worthy looks

The runway is where we get some of the best inspiration for our outfit inspiration and beauty aspiration. Every season, we keep our eyes peeled on the latest fashion shows to spark our creative imagination. From the swaths of silk and pleats of tulle to the golden highlights on the cheeks and eyes, the runway overflows with beautiful possibilities. And for that, who else is better than the professional working behind the scene herself to share on the tips and tricks of nailing the perfect look.

Nars‘ Global Artistry Director, Jane Richardson was in town to set the Mercedes-Benz KL Fashion Week 2019 ablaze. She’s no stranger in the industry working alongside some of the notable heavyweights with nearly three decades of experience under her belt, so her words are Biblical truth. Here, we are ready to take notes:

Hi Jane. Seeing how busy it can get backstage during a fashion show and applying the scenario to real life, what are some tips to achieve flawless makeup for someone constantly on the go?

It’s all about saving time, so I’d say use products that you can multitask with. Take for example, Nars’ The Multiple that you can use on the cheeks, eyes, lips and body. But first and foremost, you should always ensure that your skin is hydrated and protected as anything that you put on won’t look good otherwise.

You’d also want to use a primer to prepare the skin for the best base possible and invest in a good concealer – I use the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer all over my face in place of foundation when I have less time. Then set with loose powder by pressing it into the skin using a powder puff. The trick is to use more than you think you need to create a longer lasting, softer base that will also allow you to apply and blend the blusher and highlighter better. Buff off any excess with a brush.

Speaking of prepping the skin – can you share some skincare tips that will help ours in this hot and humid Malaysian weather?

I always double cleanse the skin and gently exfoliate using Nars Multi-action Hydrating Toner. Then, I apply lots of moisturiser, let it sit for a couple of minutes and remove the excess with a tissue. I would recommend using a moisturising mask once or twice a week to maintain the hydration levels of the skin. And of course, use a primer to protect the skin before makeup application.

Best tips on how to incorporate runway look into our daily look?

Simply take one element from what you are seeing and like, and try it on yourself. Make sure to adapt it to suit your own face and bone structure, and play with the various options with colour and texture for what you see. You don’t have to be too serious with makeup, just play and have fun.

What makeup trends do you love right now?

I love the colour block trend and the boomerang blush trend—both that I see can be executed easily for stunning looks. You will also see gloss making a comeback on the lips!

Let us in on a secret – how do you come up with the makeup looks for each fashion show?

I often research into the main ideas that have been given to me by the designer, and then create a moodboard from what has inspired me. I try to create a character, or capture elements of the idea in new ways.

What is your current favourite Nars product to work with?

I love using the Nars Shadow Sticks on the eyes as they allow me to change the feel of an eyeshadow, as well as making it last longer through layering. I also love all the bright colours as it’s always fun to find new colour combinations even after all these years with Nars!

And what is your favourite Nars collaboration so far?

That’s easy – I was thrilled to collaborate with Erdem on his Nars x Erdem ad campaign. To have the opportunity to not only work for a designer I love, but also for the brand I adore, was a collaboration I will never forget. That packaging too…simply stunning!

How would you describe your signature look?

I am told it’s skin. Simple beauty – I am told this is my signature look. So it’s keeping it clean and natural without doing too much.

Name us three beauty products that you reach for to take you from day to night

Ooh, let’s see. Via Veneto Larger Than Life Long-wear Eyeliner to line my eyes; Velvet Matte Lip Pencil—usually in Dragon Girl, Cruella or currently, Let’s Go Crazy; and more Orgasm Blusher to intensify my cheeks for the evening.

What beauty advice do you subscribed to?

My biggest beauty advice is to take care of your skin, stay out of the sun and nourish it whenever you can. Then, simply take a step back from the mirror and see yourself as others do, a confident individual.

Ok, last question. What do you wish women knew more about beauty and makeup?

I wish that so many of us women didn’t feel the need to compare themselves to others, and believe in their own beauty. So many are applying makeup like everyone else around them and covering not just their beauty but their individual personality.
