Hate it or love it, you can’t say that you didn’t see it coming. The scrunchie’s comeback is inevitable and every ’90s kid who’s reading this knows what’s up. If claw clips and lurex headbands were deemed worthy of a resurgence on the runway, this once-loved cloth hair tie could easily take over the trendwagon. Made popular by the likes of every ’80s TV female icon who were sporting it at that time (Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen did it first when they starred in Full House), scrunchies were rapidly dethroned when Carrie Bradshaw delivered that killer line on season six of Sex and the City.
But we gotta give props to brands who were trying to revive this hair trend by naming it “hair clouds” — a term introduced by Danish designer Line Sander Johansen of fashion label Comfort Objects. As of late, a slew of celebrities have been jumping on this bandwagon, sporting these velvety hair ties around their sky-high ponytails in public. Hailey Baldwin is a major fan — a quick scroll through her Instagram and you’d find her inclination for these hair fuzzies in every colour imaginable, while Ariana Grande showed us a millennial take on wearing the scrunchie (hint: we are glad it isn’t a lopsided ponytail).
Newsflash for naysayers: The scrunchie is likely a better alternative to your everyday plastic hair tie thanks to its fabric — no more unsightly dents in the hair even after wearing your hair up for half a day. Below, score one of these modern scrunchies to get on the trend, including Balenciaga’s ultra-luxe leather version:
1. Pink leather chouchou srunchy, Balenciaga
2. Silk-satin hair tie, Jennifer Behr
3. Leopard-print silk bow scrunchie, House of Lafayette
4. Pure silk scrunchie set, Slip
5. Silvery crepe scrunchie, Ganni
