Put two talented, award-winning, and incredibly inspiring women like Lupita Nyong’o and Saoirse Ronan in a room and you’d find a conversation that’s beguiling and empowering to say the least. For Calvin Klein’s latest fragrance, aptly named Calvin Klein Women, both stars are featured in the ad campaign comprising of arresting portraits and a slew of short videos — shot by visual artist Anne Collier.
“The campaign is an exploration of femininity — a group of women bonded by a common thread; the desire to have the power to create their own identity, and to support and lead the way for those that come after them,” says Simons.
The campaign visual sees Nyong’O and Ronan’s portraits collaged with four women they are inspired by, including Eartha Kitt, Katherine Hepburn — “I am drawn to their integrity, and their ability to speak up and speak out for what they believe in, to change the course of history. I admire their fierce artistic points of view and that they did not betray themselves,” explains Nyong’o; and Sissy Spacek and Nina Simone — “Seeing people doing something that they’re passionate about is inspiring. It encourages you to do the same, to feel the same,” says Ronan.
There is plenty to look forward to when it comes to this scent. The Calvin Klein Women is the first fragrance under the helm (both creative and technical) of Calvin Klein’s Chief Creative Officer Raf Simons. Described as a woody floral scent, notes of eucalyptus acorns and Alaskan cedarwood give it a unique edge, while base notes of orange flower lend a feminine finish to it. The design of the bottle (conceived by perfume bottle designer Suzanna Dalton) is an arresting work of art to say the least — from the flat, disk-shaped cap imprinted with an image by Collier to the irregularly curved glass that houses the fragrance.
