Met Gala 2021: 21 Beauty looks we actually liked from the red carpet

The Met Gala is back! Following the cancellation of last year’s event in light of the global pandemic, the 2021 Met Gala has returned as a slightly more humble affair (or, at least, as humble as it can get for fashion’s biggest night). The evening introduced the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute’s new two-part exhibit, and the theme of the 2021 Met Gala coincides with part one: ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’.

Ahead, we’ve rounded up our favourite beauty moments from the evening, from Naomi Osaka’s poignant homage to her mixed Japanese-Haitian heritage to Maisie Williams’ goth revival and more:

Naomi Osaka

The tennis star and Met Gala co-chair channeled her mixed Haitian and Japanese heritage into her look with this ornate hair and makeup look.

Hunter Schafer

The Euphoria starlet hit the red carpet with this spidery adornment and a pair of white contacts—one of our favourite uses of accessories from the evening.

Amandla Stenburg

The actress called back to the pinnacle of 00’s Hollywood fashion with her spidery lashes and her liner-heavy lips.

Yara Shahidi

The Black-ish star took to the red carpet with this beautifully-adorned, ’20s-inspired braided headpiece.

Maisie Williams

The Game of Thrones actress channeled ’80s goth subculture with this moody, ornate look (complete with bleached brows!)

Kristen Stewart

The Spencer actress sported a ’40s victory roll, pairing it with pink eyeshadow to complement her Chanel blouse.

Teyana Taylor

There is quite a lot to take in with singer Teyana Taylor’s glamorous look, from her glittery highlight to her graphic eye, but our eyes are particularly drawn to her gorgeous hairdo.

Gemma Chan

The Crazy Rich Asians actress looked radiant on the red carpet, sporting this sculptural braided hairdo.

Lil Nas X

The Montero rapper kept it simple with this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it graphic liner look, paired with radiant skin.

Gigi Hadid

The eldest Hadid supermodel wore 2021’s hair colour of the year—copper red—in a voluminous high half-ponytail.

Amanda Gorman

The American poet sported this modern bejewelled eye look to complement her ornate headband.

Alicia Keys

Taking the 2000s bejewelled trend to the next level, Alicia Keys embellished her low bun with plenty of rhinestones.

Diane Kruger

The newly-engaged actress stepped out onto the red carpet embracing all things neon, from her highlighter-green dress to her neon pink inner corner highlight.

Megan Fox

The Jennifer’s Body actress drew inspiration from ’40s Hollywood glam with her Betty bangs, arched brows, and bold red lip.

Lupita Nyong’o

The Kenyan-Mexican actress sported a shimmery, sculptural denim blue eye look to complement her Versace gown. We particularly love how her masterfully-styled hairdo flaunts her natural texture.

Kim Petras

The German singer’s look was one for horse girls everywhere—Petras’ super-long braid and blue eyeshadow matched that of the horse on her dress.

Jennifer Lopez

No one said “Yeehaw” quite like Jennifer Lopez did—the singer drew inspiration from old Western Hollywood films, pairing her deep brown embroidered dress with a stetson.

Zoe Kravitz

The actress kept her makeup look simple and radiant, drawing all eyes down to her incredible Saint Laurent dress. Her box braid bun was the perfect hairstyle for the look.

Tomi Adeyemi

The American novelist paired her updo of locs with an eye-catching, bedazzled double-wing and inner corner accent.

Barbie Ferreira

The flapper look returned with a modern twist as Barbie Ferreira sported pencil-thin brows and purple eyeshadow look with her pearl-heavy dress for the evening.

Billie Eilish

The Happier Than Ever singer channeled old Hollywood with a twist, keeping her edgy side at the forefront with her TikTok-inspired reverse eyeliner look.
