Our recent muse of the month needs no introduction. As inimitable as her style, it would come as no surprise that Jane Birkin found it challenging to find a commercially available scent that she could relate to. As fate would have it, Jane met Lyn Harris, classically trained perfumer and founder of luxury perfume house Miller Harris, through a mutual friend, setting these two creative minds on an olfactory journey unlike any other.
A Bespoke experience
Lyn offers exclusive Bespoke experiences to clients like Jane, who wants a personal scent masterfully conjured from scratch. Lyn would spend up to six months studying every detail about her client and working closely with them on developing the perfect scent, but in Jane’s case, it took them two years in the making. Just a heads up, this Bespoke service has a seven-year waiting list and will set you back by approximately RM200,000 for a scent that’s uniquely ‘you’.
Nostalgic notes
The brief that provided to Lyn was classic Jane Birkin – eccentric, unique and unconventional. Jane wanted a scent, which bottled her most precious memories – the smell of her brother’s hair, her father’s pipe, the feeling of her ex-husband’s embrace (when he was wearing a specific jacket), the warmth of movies from an era past gone, the metro in the old days and the nostalgia of dusty libraries and old books. So Lyn got to work.
The partnership
It took over two years for both Jane and Lyn to be completely happy with the finished product. Jane, a vivid storyteller, ‘didn’t stop talking’, as Lyn put it, but it was this forthcoming of ideas and input, which fueled Lyn’s drive to create what would be the most complicated Bespoke scent in her perfume-making career.
The scent
L’Air de Rien exudes rich character – very much like its muse. The scent itself, although quite indefinable, is an alluring cocktail of moss, Tunisian neroli, sweet musk, amber and vanilla – a real treat if you’re a fan of Oriental-inspired scents or simply because you’re inspired by Jane’s extraordinary life journey – definitely something to soothe the wait before that Birkin bag becomes a reality.
