Hair Colours That’ll Set Your Summer ‘Do Alight

Call it mermaid hair, My Little Pony locks or candy strands – wherever you turn, rainbow-coloured heads have been popping up like hothouse blooms in a greenhouse. Katy Perry wowed us at the Grammy Awards with a violet bob, Hillary Duff turned us green with envy with her turquoise mane, and Julianne Hough, Nicole Richie and Rita Ora all opted for varying shades of pink.

It’s the stuff of hair fantasies that captures both attention and imagination – perhaps it’s best described as ‘Disney princess meets sizzling hot punk rocker at Coachella’ – although as you might have guessed, it’ll take a bit of work to achieve, especially if you have dark hair that will need a little tweaking if you want to nail that vibrant, intense colour. In essence, you’ll have to do a fair amount of bleaching – so be prepared for its aftereffects on your hair, make sure you can commit time and effort to taking extra care of your tresses, and follow our advice right here:

1. Go Pro

Unless you’re so confident about home dyeing that you can do it in your sleep, head to a professional colourist and get them to do it for you. Not only will they be able to help portion each dye colour more evenly around the sections of your hair, but it’ll also be less messy (no scrubbing out the bathtub or shower stall afterwards) and they can advise you on the exact shades you should go for.

2. Lock the Locks

Don’t let all that hard work go to waste – maintain the freshness of your hair colour(s) by washing your hair with cold water and a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. We’re fond of L’Oréal Professionnel’s Vitamino Color A.OX Color Fixing + Perfecting Shampoo and Conditioner, which are both enriched with a powerful antioxidant complex that helps preserve your colour’s radiance, and softens your hair without weighing it down.

3. Don’t Wait, Rehydrate

All that bleach is likely to make your hair parched and dry, so placate it by giving it a treat with a deeply rehydrating conditioning mask ever week – try L’Oréal Professionnel’s Vitamino Color A.OX Color Fixing + Perfecting Jelly Masque. It only takes a minute to impart its goodness into your hair and to strengthen it using UV filters, tocopherol, panthenol, and neohespiridin. Your locks will thank you in the long run when they’re still looking as fresh as the day you dyed them, even if it’s a few weeks down the line.
