Beauty sleep is real and why you need to catch up on it this weekend

The struggle is real! Some women seem able to juggle it all, while others not so much. In today’s rat race, it would seem that one of the first things we compromise on is sleep. Needless to say, this can cause a number of issues physically as well emotionally, and now even socially.

A research published in the Royal Society Open Science journal has found that people who miss out on sleep do appear significantly uglier to others. The researchers from the Karolinska Institute have even gone so far to say that dark-circled “panda” eyes and puffy lids can put others off socialising with you.

For the purpose of the experiment, 25 university students – both guys and girls – were roped in to be guinea pigs. Each was given a kit to measure his or her night-time movements and keep track of sleeping habits. For two consecutive nights, they got a good night’s sleep but a week later, they were asked to restrict themselves to only four hours sleep per night for two nights in a row. Following this, the researchers took makeup free photos of the volunteers after both good and bad sleeps.

Next, some 122 men and women were asked to take a look at the photos and rate the volunteers based on attractiveness, health, sleepiness and trustworthiness. One of the questions was, “How much would you like to socialise with this person in the picture?” The answers were interesting — the strangers were good at judging if the person they were looking at was tired, and if they were sleepy, their attractiveness score took a dive. The respondents also said they would be less likely to socialise with the tired students, who were perceived as to be less healthy.

Yikes! Ladies, you know what to do this weekend. Go ahead, hit the snooze button. A little R&R would do both your physical and mental wellbeing good, not to mention your social life too.
