The Ultimate Guide to Staying Fresh All Day During Festival Season

When it comes to surviving music festivals, hygiene is non-negotiable. Luckily, we’ve got all the hacks you need to stay fresh and smell good all day long!

Festival season is a true test of endurance, especially for those of us who take our hygiene seriously. You’ll be pushed around the pit, drenched through your clothes, and dodging bodies at every turn, all while the unmistakable scent of BO drifts through the crowd—and sometimes, yes, it’s coming from you. With showers and sinks often out of reach, staying fresh and smelling good all day can feel like an impossible task. But here’s the truth: it’s completely doable with a little preparation and strategy. The simplest solution? Arm yourself with our low-effort hygiene hacks, pack your bags with these festival essentials, and you can bop to the music without worrying about the funk!

HACK #1: DON’T SKIP THE DEODORANT OR ANTIPERSPIRANT!

This might sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people still skip deodorant or antiperspirant in their daily routines. Even on a normal day, it’s your first line of defence against body odour. They’re compact, easy to toss into your bag, and quick to reapply between sets, whether you’re freshening up in a restroom line or doing a quick touch-up in the crowd. Choosing between the two comes down to your priority: if you’re looking to neutralise odour, go for a deodorant, but if you’re trying to minimise sweat and stay dry in the heat, an antiperspirant is your best bet. It’s also worth looking out for formulas that won’t stain or leave yellow marks on your clothes, especially if you’re wearing lighter colours!

HACK #2: STOCK UP ON MULTI-PURPOSE CLEANSING WIPES

While some festival grounds offer portable showers and sinks, they’re not always easy to access in a venue of thousands. The next best thing? A quick head-to-toe refresh with cleansing wipes. If you have sensitive skin, opt for unscented formulas to avoid irritation, especially after hours under the sun. At the same time, look for wipes with antibacterial properties to help lift away dirt, sweat, and grime, or those with a menthol effect to cool down your body in the sweltering heat. Focus on key areas like your underarms, neck, behind the knees, and anywhere that needs a little extra help.

HACK #3: CARRY TRAVEL-SIZED DRY SHAMPOO

Greasy hair is a persistent concern in humid weather, but dry shampoo will be your ultimate saviour. Not only does it instantly absorb excess oil at the roots, but it also adds volume when your hair starts to lose its shape halfway through the day, which is extremely helpful when you barely have time to restyle it. Pick a travel-sized bottle so you can easily stash it in your bag or even your pocket. Powder formulas are also a great alternative for on-the-go fixes (especially if you have bangs!), while scented options will keep your hair looking and smelling fresh all day long.

HACK #4: SWAP OUT HEAVY PERFUMES FOR BODY MISTS

Stronger fragrances can sometimes feel a little too heavy or cloying in the heat. Instead, consider switching to body mists, since they’re much lighter than perfumes. While they come in plenty of scents, we’d recommend leaning towards citrusy, cleaner notes as they feel more breathable in festival conditions (brownie points if they double as a hair mist!). If you’re determined to stick to your usual perfume, try looking for it in solid or rollerball form so you can reapply more discreetly and avoid over-spraying in close quarters.

BURO Tip: If you’re bringing a folding paper fan, add a few spritzes of your favourite body mist to it. That way, every fan comes with a refreshing burst of your signature scent, keeping you cool while subtly keeping unpleasant smells around you at bay!

HACK #5: BRING A CHANGE OF UNDERWEAR

At some point between performances, you’re going to make a trip to the loo—so use that moment wisely and change your knickers! It’s a small effort that makes a big difference in keeping the down under clean and reducing unwanted odours. Go for breathable, skin-friendly materials like cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics so you stay comfortable throughout the day. If your outfit allows for it, wear looser bottoms so everything underneath is well-ventilated and stays dry for longer.
