DIY Health Tip: Protein bar recipe

Protein bars are a great pre- or post-workout snack and also are a wonderful snack to have on-the-go. Although store-bought protein bars are advertised as healthy and sugar-free, most of them actually contain a long list of additives that can do more harm than good to your bodies. The best way to ensure that you are getting the right nutrients from your protein bars is to make them on your own. That way, you are in complete control of what goes into them.


Allergic to a certain nut? Replace it with a different kind. Like more seeds in your bar? Add more! This paleo-friendly and gluten-free recipe can be easily improvised to match your tastebuds and health requirements. All you need to do is to make sure that your mixture is nice and sticky so that it will harden into a easy-to-handle block. 


3/4 cup of almonds

1/4 cup of pecans

1/4 cup of pumpkin seeds

1/4 cup dried fruit/ coconut flakes (optional)

2 tablespoons of flaxseeds

2 tablespoons of sesame seeds

2 tablespoons of melted coconut oil

1/2 cup of raw honey



1. Preheat oven to 175 degrees Celcius, line your baking tray with parchment paper, and lightly grease it with coconut oil

2. Chop the nuts to your desired size

3. Add all the nuts and seeds into a large mixing bowl and stir

4. Add the melted coconut oil and raw honey into a separate bowl and stir

5. Pour the melted coconut oil and raw honey mixture over the nuts and seeds mixture and stir until everything is evenly coated

6. Pour mixture into parchment lined baking tray and use a spatula to compress the mixture evenly on the tray

7. Bake for 15 — 20 minutes

8. Remove from oven and let it cool for 20 minutes

9. Place in the fridge for 1 hour or until it hardens

10. Remove from fridge and cut into bars (we recommend using a big and sharp knife)
