Sun, Sea and Blue Hinoki: Art, Music, and Fragrance Collide at Tamburins’ Latest Pop-Up in Seoul

For this edition of BURO Beauty Diaries, Beauty Editor Redzhanna follows Tamburins to Seoul for the launch of the Blue Hinoki fragrance collection.

Picture this: A hinoki tree drifts in the sea, slowly wearing over time with the scorching heat of the sun and the salt of the ocean. As the tides wash over it, the wood is moulded and transformed, sculpted with soft curves on its surface as it becomes steeped in the cool blue hue of the water.

The latest fragrance collection from Tamburins evokes this exact imagery. Blue Hinoki is distinctly marine, boasting an addictive accord of hinoki, bergamot, pine oil and a hint of salt-infused driftwood. It’s the perfect scent for the summer, whisking you away to the seaside with every spritz.

To learn more about the new collection, I joined Tamburins on a trip to Seoul for the opening of its Blue Hinoki Pop-Up in Seongsu. Ahead, find an exclusive sneak peek of what to expect at the event.

Part 1: Sun & Sea Opera

On the first and second floors of the pop-up space is the Sun & Sea Opera. The show initially premiered at Vilnius National Gallery of Art in 2017 before being translated into English and presented at the 2019 Venice Biennale. Now, for the launch of Blue Hinoki, Tamburins officially presents the award-winning performance in Korea for the very first time.

Set on a crowded beach lit by a perpetual sun (crafted indoors with the help of 30 tons of imported sand, of course), the ephemeral performance follows families, friends and lovers who bask in the glow. The opera is unlike any other I have ever experienced—created by Lithuanian female artists Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, Vaiva Grainytė, and Lina Lapelytė, the critically-acclaimed performance unfolds in a continuous loop over several hours, with the audience rotating in one-hour intervals.

There isn’t a distinct plot nor any one star in the show. Rather, it’s an ensemble of performers that indulge in mundane beach activities while musing on everything from boredom to climate change; a poignant production that leaves lots of room for reflection and contemplation. Ultimately, the show stirs up a feeling that perfectly resonates with the new fragrance.

The Sun And Sea Opera is open to the public from 21 June 2025 to 24 June 2025, from 1pm to 4pm at 258-1, Seongsu-dong 2-ga, Seongdong-gu, Seoul. The performance is currently fully booked.

Part 2: Blue Hinoki Pop-Up

On the third floor is the Blue Hinoki pop-up space, which recreates the set from the campaign film starring actor Byeon Woo-Seok. The space is drenched in pale azure to reflect the fragrance’s hue, contrasted with rich textures and bold shapes and accented with pops of red. All in all, the space is designed to enhance your experience of the new collection, transporting you into the tranquil and surreal world of Blue Hinoki.

The Blue Hinoki fragrance is available in three sizes—the Perfume 50ml, housed in a glass flacon decorated with a spherical stone lid; the Perfume 11ml, a travel-sized version of the iconic bottle; and the the Egg Perfume 14ml, which contains the scent within a compact, egg-shaped bottle decorated with a miniature turtle sculpture.

In addition, the scent is also available in several body care products. You can enhance your shower routine with the Showery Body Wash or elevate your grooming routine with the Perfume Deodorant and Perfume Shell X hand cream, layering up to your heart’s content. Finally, the Car Diffuser and Perfume Vinyl bring the magic of Blue Hinoki into your daily routine, infusing your surroundings with the fragrance.

While the key products in the collection are available to shop online and in-store in Korea, the Seongsu pop-up also offers exclusive pieces to elevate your scent ritual. The first is the Rattan Wear Egg Perfume Case—a stylish, wearable accessory that allows you to carry the scent of Blue Hinoki with you on the go. There are also exclusive gifts available with purchase at the pop-up store, including the mini Perfume Vinyl and Sand Ball collection, so if you happen to be visiting Seoul in the next month, I’d say it’s definitely worth stopping by!

The Tamburins Blue Hinoki pop-up space will be open to the public from 25 June 2025 to 27 July 2025 from 11am to 7pm at 23, Ttukseom-ro 17-gil, Seongdong-gu, Seoul.
