Where to go for Christmas specials and feasts this year

Table & Apron’s 31 Days of Christmas

If there’s one word to describe Table & Apron’s food, it’s ‘wholesome’. With most of their dishes and sauces house-made, dining here tends to invoke a sense of homeyness and this Christmas, that taste is even stronger. For bigger groups, enjoy a Christmas Roast which can either be a massive 2.5kg crispy porchetta or a perfectly roasted chicken with accompanying sides of potatoes, carrot or salad.

For something smaller, we’d recommend the Pie of the Day which comes in three flavours but usually, two are served on rotation each day. We tried the Beef & Porcini Pie and it was absolutely divine—beef in tender pieces, soft pieces of carrot, flavourful sauce and the most fragrant house-made pastry. That, a side of crisp Mozzarella Arancini (with tomato chutney on the side) and a dessert (more on that later) was just nice for two.

To end the meal on a sweet (but not too sweet) note is the Gingerbread Pudding accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Featuring small chewy chunks of ginger, the texture is dense yet slightly spongey. Eat it on its own and the taste of ginger is strong. Eat it with the ice cream and it’s a harmonious balance of flavours. Last but not least, we’d recommend ordering their Christmas Roselle pitchers for drinks. Refreshingly sweet.

WIP’s Tropical-themed Christmas Menu

Going out of the box this festive season is WIP, with a spread of Hawaiian-inspired delicacies and drinks availability all the way till Christmas Day. You have to try The Kuleke Platter, which has everything you’d love in a sharing dish and more. The wholesome platter covering both savoury and sweet is served with sliced roasted turkey, fresh water prawns, chicken Merguez and spicy beef sausages (these were deliciously flavourful), roasted and sautéed vegetables, as well as red wine poached pear, grapes and fresh strawberries with a chocolate dip. Need we say more?

If you’re looking for a main, the Aloha Beef Burger and Huli Huli Chicken make for hearty choices. We went for the latter, a popular Hawaiian dish of grilled chicken barbecued over mesquite wood with sweet huli huli sauce (pineapple juice, ketchup, soy sauce, sherry vinegar, brown sugar and ginger) that provided just the right kick to the tender smoked meat.

To end the night, take it away with WIP bar’s selection of Tiki-style cocktails.

The Spaghetti Lobster at Pince and Pints

When one thinks of lobster feasting, surely Pince and Pints will come to mind. Making decisions easier, KL’s go-to lobster joint is introducing just one main festive star to their menu—The Spaghetti Lobster. Taking comfort food up a notch, this seemingly simple yet glorious dish hits all the right spots with its tomato ragu made of fresh plum cherry tomatoes, house-made beef stock and a hint of cognac, and fresh, juicy lobster chunks seasoned with basil, pepper and salt, all tossed with perfectly cooked pasta.

The Spaghetti Lobster is priced at RM148, now available at Pince and Pints

TWG Tea’s 2017 Joy of Christmas Festive Menu

It’s the most wonderful time of the year at TWG Tea as they’ve brought back their festive menu once again for the holiday season. This year, the celebration begins with three indulgent options for the appetiser: Creamy pan seared foie gras served with wild mushroom mousse infused with White Christmas Tea, candied orange and wild berry mélange (the combination of savoury meets the sweetness of the candied orange is wildly but pleasantly surprising); homemade spiced green pea soup with a touch of Red of Africa infused chilli oil and cream; and a trio of Hokkaido scallop, poached king prawn and peppered yellow fin tuna served with citrus mélange, salmon roe, beetroot pickle and mesclun with Lemon Bush Tea infused honey mustard dressing.

For the main event, it’s even tougher to make a choice. There’s the Magret de Canard (duck breast marinated with French Earl Grey and citrus), Poisson Au Beurre Blanc (pan-roasted Emperor Fish fillet) and Beef Tenderloin (Pan seared grain-fed Australian beef tenderloin with herb butter). I opted for the beef with no regrets. The meat is tender, easily sliced away, piece by piece, and the Red Christmas tea beef jus was a delightful accompaniment.

Dessert is a mini Christmas yule log that will have both your sweet tooth and your cameras at the ready.

TWG Tea’s 3-course festive set menu is priced at RM98, inclusive of a pot of tea. Available till 31 Dec 2017.
