Chanel entered the world of Haute Horlogerie more than three decades ago with Première as its very first offering. Designed by Jacques Helleu—the artistic director of the House at the time—the elegant timepiece stood out by its case, which resembles the stopper of the N°5 perfume bottle as well as the octagonal design of Place Vendôme—home of the Chanel Watches and Fine Jewellery Creation Studios. Likewise, the gold-tone steel chain link intertwined with black leather on the bracelet evokes the chain of classic Chanel bags.

While the adoption of a black lacquer dial and the absence of Roman numerals accentuate the boldness and originality that are distinctive to Chanel, the timepiece also emits the allure that many minimalists find appealing. Other than that, the gold hands and polished case pay homage to Gabrielle Chanel’s appreciation of all things glistening, from Baroque and Byzantine relics to Venetian objects of art. More importantly, the stunning timepiece sports a quartz movement with high precision and water resistance of up to 30 metres.

In the present day, the French Maison celebrates the fine artistry that goes into the timepiece with the launch of the Première Édition Originale watch, and who better to front the campaign than Lily-Rose Depp? Following her appointment as the new muse of Chanel watches last month, the French-American actress stars in a film directed by Inez and Vinoodh that sees her effortlessly capture the feminine essence of the watch amid Gabrielle Chanel’s legendary apartment at 31 rue Cambon in Paris.
