An honorable mention: The IWC Schaffhausen Big Pilot’s Watch Edition “Patrouille Suisse”

For decades, the Patrouille Suisse has been wowing international crowds with the precision and perfection of their aerobatic formation flying. Renowned watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen once again pays tribute to the high-flying pilots of the Swiss Air Force display team with a special edition for 2015. Limited to just 250 watches, the Big Pilot’s Watch Edition “Patrouille Suisse” features a case of blasted stainless steel alongside characteristic design elements that make this professional timepiece for pilots instantly identifiable. The 46-millimetre case encloses a soft-iron cage that protects the watch movements against extreme magnetic fields, while the case back features an engraving of three jet planes resembling the Northrop F-5E Tiger II – the planes the Patrouille Suisse pilots use to perform their aerial displays.

Powered by the 51011 calibre, it showcases all the features that have proved their worth in the long history of mechanical watches from IWC. A masterpiece in precision, the watch system builds up a power of over 7 days, and after exactly 168 hours the movement is mechanically stopped by an ingenious train in the power reserve. The power reserve display is indicated at 3 o’clock, whereas the 9 o’clock sub-dial indicates small seconds.
