Inside Grand Seiko’s ‘Nature of Time’ exhibition

At a far corner of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, time stands still as if nature itself had paused to admire its own reflection. The Nature of Time exhibition is afoot. Orchestrated by Grand Seiko, in partnership with Sincere Fine Watches, the showcase uproots the Japanese forests and reveals their safeguarded secrets. Within the intimate space, blocks of white matter transform into pages onto which stories of craftsmanship and innovation are written.

Amidst the serene surroundings, glass-enclosed displays housing Grand Seiko’s greatest hits are framed by a sizeable blank slate. Moving images of trees swaying in the wind grace its surface via projection mapping. The ambient sounds of a gentle breeze and sighing leaves make Nature of Time a thoroughly immersive experience. Thoughtfully curated, the screening demonstrates the interplay of light and shadow that has long influenced the watchmaker’s design language.

The installation captures the essence of birch trees, whose shades and textures inform the design of the Evolution 9 range. The manually wound dress watch SLGW003, subtly integrated into the scenery, illuminates the intent. Accompanying the collection are the two Kodo Constant-Force Tourbillons. Masterpieces in their own right, these stunning pieces similarly embody Grand Seiko’s fusion of cutting-edge technology with refined Japanese aesthetics.

Turning the exhibition into a multi-sensorial exploration, Grand Seiko has partnered with Kyoto’s 1 Michelin-starred restaurant Kinobu to curate an exclusive chef’s table menu. The intimate culinary affair offers a four-course Japanese platter that reflects the precision and harmony of Japanese watchmaking. Featuring freshly flown-in seasonal ingredients, the highlights here include the sweetened boiled ayu and the chutoro sashimi.

The ‘Nature of Time’ exhibition by Grand Seiko is open to the public at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur (opposite Sincere Fine Watches boutique) until 2 January 2025. The Chef’s Table experience is priced at RM 198++ per pax and available in four sessions a day, excluding Monday, between 12pm to 3pm and 6pm to 9pm. Reservation must be made seven days in advance via The Nature of Time Exhibition microsite.
