Guess who owns that stunning emerald engagement ring in Crazy Rich Asians?

Yes, you might have guessed it—that beautiful emerald and diamond ring worn by Eleanor Young actually belongs to Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh herself. The ring is later the engagement ring that Nick (Henry Golding) uses to propose to Rachel (Constance Wu) with, so it’s quite the significant, and impressionable, piece of jewellery for the film.

How did Michelle Yeoh’s own ring make it to the movie? Director Jon M. Chu tells the story in an interview with Vulture: “We had a ring designed already, and our mock-up looked so sh*tty that Michelle [Yeoh] was like, ‘That cannot be the ring I wear’. I’m like, ‘I know, I know. I’m so embarrassed by it, but we don’t have the money.’ She’s like, ‘I have a better ring than that.'”

Michelle Yeoh then asked her assistant to bring out her personal jewellery box, and pulled out the ring, a stunning emerald and diamond creation that she bought as a gift to herself. “She pulls it out, and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s our ring,'” said Chu.

When asked about having her own jewellery used in the film at the Hollywood premiere, Yeoh mused: “I think jewelry are made to be worn. It’s a shame when they have to sit in the bank all the time, right?”

That sounds about right.

Crazy Rich Asians is now in cinemas nationwide.
