Dior Rose des Vents: Reinventing Christian Dior’s good luck charms

Dior Joaillerie’s latest Rose des Vents collection pays homage to the Christian Dior by taking inspiration from his favourite lucky charms that were important recurring motifs in the late couturier’s life. The motif of the rose des vents, also known as the wind rose, is seen since his childhood in Granville, Normandy where it was scattered throughout the decor of the family home. The wind rose also happens to be Monsieur Dior’s favourite flower, being a timeless symbol of adventure and travel—one that always brought good luck.

“I wanted to start from the idea of a little motif pendant,” says Dior Joaillerie’s creative director Victoire de Castellane. “And what is more metaphorical than a medallion? A symbol of travel, in it you find echoes of Christian Dior’s star and the idea of the good luck charm, but also the rose, his favorite flower. The whole history of the house is there, implicitly.”

The Rose des Vents collection includes one long necklace, four necklaces and four bracelets—each of the pieces in the collection is double-sided. A diamond set in the center of a “rose des vents” in pink gold lies on one side, whereas a precious stone representing each of the cardinal direction lies on the other: mother-of-pearl for north, turquoise for south, pink opal for east, and lapis lazuli for west. Fun fact: The colours of these stones represent some of Monsieur Dior’s favorite colours.
