This past AW19 Haute Couture week was filled with countless of awe-inspiring creations, and needless to say, both Chanel and Dior managed to deliver with yet another spectacular collections this season. But couture looks aside, the two Maisons also introduced their latest high jewellery line, and they’re not to be missed. Along with Gucci, the latest fashion house to venture into the world of haute joaillerie, these brands allowed us to enter their magical world of bling. From diamonds to pearls and gemstones, prepare to be in awe of the sparkles.
Here’s what you need to know about Chanel, Dior, and Gucci’s high jewellery collections:
Chanel

Dubbed Le Paris Russe De Chanel, the French fashion house’s latest high jewellery collection is inspired by founder Coco Chanel’s love for Russian culture and design. Even though she has never set foot in the country, she had a short-lived affair with Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, cousin of Russia’s last emperor Tsar Nicholas II. It was him who had introduced her to motifs that would soon resonate in her creations. The 63-piece collection presented by the director of Chanel’s Fine Jewellery Creation Studio, Patrice Leguéreau, was filled with elements from Russian decorative arts. There are colourful jewels that reflect the bright hues of roubachkas; shapes in homage to the kokoshnik, and traditional folklore prints. That being said, the collection is filled with Chanel references too. The two-headed eagle, for example, was derived from the Baroque mirror in the designer’s apartment on the Rue Cambon, and the brand’s signature camellia can be spotted throughout.
Dior

If “more is more” is your mantra when it comes to accessorising, Dior’s latest high jewellery collection is made for you. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of its High Jewellery department, Dior launched Gem Dior, which is a play on words between gem in English, and j’aime—which translates to ‘I love’—in French. The collection is a declaration of love to stones, and whether it’s a diamond, ruby, purple or spessartine garnet, pink or yellow sapphire, emerald, tsavorite, grenadine or cobalt blue spinel, tanzanite, Rubellite or Paraiba-type tourmaline, you’ll be able to find something that tickles your fancy. To complement the rainbow palette of gems, an array of cuts is introduced, including baguette, square, pear, marquise, cushion and oval, all layered on top of one another to conceal the setting, and to, of course, tune up the wow factor. Among the wide range of statement-making pieces, there are some toned down designs for minimalists too. The Blanc Glaçon diamond earrings and earcuff are some of our favourites.
Gucci

What do you get when Alessandro Michele designs a high jewellery collection for Gucci? An OTT mash-up of the House’s iconic motifs, vibrant hues and chunky details. Named the Hortus Deliciarum (Garden of Delights), over 200 pieces from the line revolve around three distinct themes. The first, a tribute to the emblems of eternal love, features a sapphire tiara and several heart-shaped designs. There was also a celebration of the brand’s signature animals. Lions, bees, and serpents, peppered all over the earrings, necklaces and rings, bringing us into a magical world of fauna. Lastly, the final chapter played with gemstones, where rubies, tourmalines, topazes, and garnets take centre stage, radiating maximalist allure like no other. We can’t wait to see what Michele has in store for us next.
